Downtempo, chill [non-vocal], ambient

does anyone else enjoy some non-vocal nice relaxing electronic music?

i’ve been listening to a lot of tycho and online ambient radio stations. i’m trying to find some specific bands to check out. i’m not into the reggae “heavy low end” stuff. i’ve liked some royksopp stuff i heard on the radio, but then i check out one of their albums and its hardcore edm. thievery corporation is too reggae (for me).

does anyone have any direction on what i should check out? thanks in advance.

I’m not sure about relaxing but Boards of Canada is definitely one to check out.

This too:

Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Anything by Biosphere should float your boat. I am also a fan of L’Ombre, if you can find any.

Steve Roach

Kruder & Dorfmeister - K&D Sessions

Might be too slack, but check out Scorn - Gyral
I guess this one is actually “dark ambient” [:P]

thanks all. keep um coming.

Also it may be obvious but, obvious is what it is - Tangerine Dream!

Here are some of my favorites, with great albums to start with-

Definitely check out Merzbow and Boris, excellent for going to bed at night. Happy Dreaming!

I always liked the Windham Hill samplers.

They were just really cool (and pretty creative) acoustic instrumentals with a lot of string work (guitar mostly).

I think they called this stuff “new age” for a while, and there was even a soft listening channel that played a bunch of it. KTWV (“The Wave”).

Eno
Harold Budd
Mick Harris
Jon Hasell
Thomas Koner
Lots of Bill Laswell stuff
Stars of the Lid
Divination

Data Rebel - one of my current favorites:

He will sell his full catalogue for download at a discount.

Others I’ve listened to over the years:

CHILLOUT:

CFCF - Continent - great album (“Raining Patterns” was popular)
Bing Satellites (“Open”)
Frank Arnold (“Frozen Moments”)
Solar Fields (“Air Song”)
Stuart Elliot
Ulrich Schnauss (“You Were The Only One Around”)
16B (“Inbetween Your Choice”)
Darshan Ambient
Torch Song (Toward The Unknown Region is a classic)
Shiloh (on the dancy/EDM side, but the Bleed album has come great chillout tracks on it)

AMBIENT:
Thom Brennan (one of my favorites)
IXOHOXI (hard to find, but I have it all, few videos on YouTube)
Steve Roach
David Helpling & Jon Jenkins (the ‘Found’ album is really good, and they also release music independently)
Robin Guthrie (ex-Cocteau Twins, his albums are borderline ambient)
Phillip Wilkerson
Kit Watkins
John Serrie
Jeff Pearce
Palancar
Michael Brook (check out his first album ‘Hybrid’ with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the track “Ocean Motion” is on YouTube)
Robert Rich (he has also collaborated with Steve Roach)
Vidna Obmana (another Roach collaborator)
Paul Avegerinos

My wife buys a lot of these Buddha Bar compilations.
They’re pretty groovy for background or chill out music too.

I prefer the goofier Tiki shit, though (she gets a fair amount of Tiki lounge stuff too).

Some of my current favorites in this area:

Pye Corner Audio (similar to John Carpenter)
Sinoia Caves (did the soundtrack for Beyond the Black Rainbow)
Jon Brooks / The Advisory Circle (or anything on Ghost Box)
The Haxan Cloak (maybe more spooky/unsettling than chill…)
Oneohtrix Point Never
Oval
Fever Ray (has vocals, but I still have this on heavy rotation)
Vangelis (others have mentioned Tangerine Dream and Jarre already, so I’d throw this in as well)
