do you think Al will actually teach?

This whole education thing seems like a buncha silly talk to me.

Should I be sharpening my pencils and buying a Trapperkeeper?

I don’t think any college in their right mind would hire Al unless they are going on the name recognition thing as a desperate grab for cash! but then again his name isn’t reall that recognizeable. And #2 he needs at least a masters degree (does he even have a A.A.?) to teach at a college level.

Al’s a pretty determined guy when he has something on his mind… he always manages to get it done.

Thing is, who knows when he’ll give up his current projects altogether? Two years back, he mentioned it in passing and said he’d do “one more Ministry record”. As of last fall, he said “two Ministry records”, now it’s just one more after Mole. As I asked him in an e-mail interview I did with him in mid-2003, he said this:::

“I probably will never stop the process of ‘making’ music, just the process of releasing, marketing, and touring (in other words, the “'biz” side). Yes, I do plan on teaching high school or college in the near future… it’s been a life-long dream. I plan on writing (literature) as well… it’s all art to me!!!”

I think he means it.

Read the current interview @ Uranium in the News on this site… he’s already talked to peeps at the University Of Texas. I’m sure they’d love to have him.

Colleges hire celebrities to teach all the time - it’ll probably be some kind of specialized course though, like “The History of Political Commentary in Popular Music” or something.

He is well educated - he’s got a BA from UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) I think (where he met Groovy Man from TKK), and he did get (or was close to getting) a teaching degree…

i read in an interview he intended to teach prehistory. does this mean teaching people about prehistory, is it like when people say they’re doing pre-med?

I think Sociology 101 would be an approproiate forum for Al.

When I talked to him in New Orleans he seemed quite pysched and happy about teaching. Wanted to do some stuff on history and political science. Which seems pretty fitting to me. I think with as intelligient as Al is he would make a great teacher, and with his varied history himself and career as an entertainer that he would be great at getting the class into it and keeping them interested in the topics.

About this teaching issue: I admire the ability of the great teachers I’ve had that pique your interest in learning. It isn’t something I could do, not having the patience to mold young minds or “spoon feed” them what I want them to say.

But i wonder If Al would be just a tad too didactic, or limit free discussion. Al seems to be bright, interesting person with plenty of personal charisma. But these aren’t the only things needed for a good teacher.

University of Phoenix will probably take him.
