I always thought those instruments from the Full Metal Jacket soundtrack added some interesting atmosphere. The soundtrack on Amazon has them…and most of the users are saying the soundtrack sucks becuase of them.

On the soundtrack CD it’s called Ruins I think. Kubrick’s daughter did the instrumentals.

The Shining is a damn fine slab o’ gut churning terror - if one can get one’s hands on a copy that is.
Man that shit be rare.
I’ve always found soundtracks to be alot creepier than so called ‘disturbing’ bands like Wolf Eyes, Bastard Noise or Throbbing Gristle. Especially some of the more obscure Ennio Morricone pieces. His work on the Dario Argento films is especially worthy, if one is looking for unsettling mood pieces.
Maybe start with the Morricone compilation available on Ipecac, if you are unsure where to find this stuff.
Why did no one tell me about this? I lurves some Chris Cunningham!

The first minute or so of that was rather unsettling…anyway, I’ve compiled the first of what will likely be four hours of music for this piece - it starts out a little more conventional than I would like, with stuff like Death in June, Coil, Throbbing Gristle, etc.
I have bigger plans for the second hour, but am still looking for suggestions for ‘disturbing music.’ Thanks to everyone so far!
Richard H. Kirk’s “Disposable Half Truths” 1979 solo album is phenomenal. Anything by CV prior to “Crackdown”, of course.
Some of Raymond Scott’s “electronic” stuff is also freaky, in a “it gets to you after a while” sort of way.
The Ligeti & Gottwold selections on the 2001: A Space Odyssey soundtrack are appropriate disturbing, especially in the context of the film.
Chris Watson’s field recordings are pretty good, if “spooky found sounds” are your thing.
Organisation “Tonefloat” (the earliest incarnation of Kraftwerk) plays some stunning 1969 head-full-of-acid type Krautrock-Eastern stuff. Not to be missed but never legitimately released on CD.
Of course, RDJ/Aphex Twin is always a safe bet.
