Looks like Discogs is on its way to shutting down bootleg sales.
It seems a great many, if not all, Kiss The Stone releases are not allowed to be sold there now…
For Ministry’s Lollapalloza '92 Kiss The Stone release you get this message.
This release has been blocked from sale in the marketplace. It is not permitted to sell this item on Discogs.
Bon Jovi Acoustic from Kiss The Stone is also being blocked.
I didn’t bother to check all of the KTS releases before I ran over here to tell everyone. I figured two was enough checking.
WOW. I came into a decent amount of moolah about a year and a half ago, and went on a Discogs.com spree of KTS purchases. Looks like I was just in time.
The KTS boots were amazing. I remember being 17 and pestering the salesman behind the counter at the record store to see the bootlegs (they were in a box under the counter and every time I foolishly said “bootleg” instead of “import” he winced visibly). KTS was the bootleg label for quality sound and packaging.
I’ve seen a recent uptick in bootlegs recently at indie record stores, and not just KTS… new ones, probably pulled from the Internet and packaged nicely. Just sayin’.
I really hope this does not signal the end for Discogs by putting their nose in where it doesn’t belong because let’s face it, where do you draw the line? There’s a lot of “bootlegs” by Kid606, Throbbing Gristle, Pink Floyd and a lot of this stuff due to (whatever reason or another) is simply red tape hell in releasing.
The site has been around for 14 years, and has been very self contained in keeping out BS. There’s even moderators. I think it speaks for itself.

The new ones are crap. The recording may be nice but they are all CD-Rs with ink jet “booklets” and tray liners. I refuse to pay for the packaging of boots that i can make myself. I havent seen any new professional *imports in quite some time. I think the only silver cd imports come out of russia anymore and those are just usually regular albums from unauthorized publishers.
(*with respects to your behind the counter record clerk guy)

LOL on the footnote. I know what you mean by the ink jet booklets, CD-Rs, etc. These are different. They’re almost a throwback to the bootlegs of the 90s. Everything is professional, including the tray, the booklet, and the silver CDs. And this is live stuff, not the Russian “greatest hits” digipacks.
Do a search on Cellar Dweller, out of the United Kingdom, if you’re curious. I have a Tool bootleg of theirs that looks and sounds great, and it was recorded less than a year ago.

I will definitely check that out. Thanks for the tip
Is cellar dweller the label or the store?
All the cellar dweller stuff on discogs is CDr. google searches bring up some B movie. You got a link to the store?

I don’t know if they have a significant Web presence. For all I know it’s the actual used record store cooking them up. All I wanted to express is the professionalism with which they’re executed.
They’ll eventually migrate to eBay en masse. This would be a good time for someone to open a site just like Discogs, except specifically for “unofficial” items. I’m sure it would last at least a week before the RIAA found it, like a heat-seeking missile, and send it a cease and desist.

What kind of jurisdiction does the RIAA have over private peer to peer sales? It seems odd to me that they can just come in and shut this all down. I can see them going after distributors and the creators of this stuff but people with an extra copy they want to unload doesn’t seem right especially since it’s already been initially sold
I have no idea whether the RIAA’s imposition on Discogs is legal or illegal. Neither would surprise me. Whatever its legality, it certainly scared the shit outta Discogs.
Again, where does one draw the line? You can already sell and buy items second-hand on their store, it’s all third-party…at least the bootlegs are listed as “unofficial” and you can even click said term to define what is what.
I mean, I’m not crying or anything, I just find it amazing that a site like Discogs has self-governed so well up until this point for this to occur.
