Dimension X

Hi Gang,

Here’s a animated short from a few years back that I did the music for and co-wrote. I may have posted this a year or two back when it was on some Sci-Fi Channel web contest. Either way, lemme know what you think.

great stuff. i am impressed. not sure where you live… but here in america there’s a channel called Cartoon Network and on sunday nights they have a section called adult swim. the idea is “mature cartoons”. your stuff is as good - if not better - than some of the crap they run on there. you should contact them. i’m sure that took a lot of work. so congrats. great audio work too.

edit: after a little googling i see you guys are from MN. So you know about Adult Swim. good work.

Thanks very much for the kind comments, it means a lot! I cannot take too much of the credit as Nick Kunin co-wrote and animating this and it’s really his baby start to finish, I just was lucky enough to be along for the ride.

A few years back we did shop it around. We had a plot breakdown for a 13 episode series laid out. John Andrews (who produced Liquid Television back in the day) sent it to Cartoon Network, MTV and some other places but no one bit. I think the lack of poop and fart jokes boggled their minds.

Ah well, I’m just pleased it is finally up somewhere that people can view it.

That’s a great little short man! I’m really fond of the animation! your musical score is spot on as well! is this all you got? Have you guys done anymore or this other guy in the mindset that it’s only worth pursuing if you’re getting paid? I like the tits on the main girl. I like how when the vampires talk it starts out as jumbled letters in the word balloons! really it kinda reminds me of the original AEon Flux cartoon. obviously not the same story but the type of animation and story telling seems in the same vein. Good job! if that didn’t win anykind of award for the scifi channel the thing was rigged.

yeah that was really cool, i was hooked instantly. dammit, I want resolution! =(

It’s not working on this laptop for some reason, will check it out later. Based on comments it would be something I would dig.

What happened to all that good MTV animation??? Liquid TV, Aeon Flux, The Head, The Maxx… that stuff was great.

Speaking of the head anyone here happen to have the original broadcast eps of that series? Or season 2 of it? Same with the maxx…
Been looking for that stuff for a while, I have a VHS rip of the head, edited lots. Have had NO luck tracking season 2 which focuses more on the ‘freaks’. I remember seeing maybe one ep of it back in the day.

Sorry… bit OT [laugh]

some of that liquid tele was good. and some was just wierd to be wierd. i bought the AEON FLUX animation DVD a while back. great to just have on the tv for a screen saver. really well done.

also i’m sure you guys know this - but that’s where beavis and butthead got started (liquid tv). they were just a little 7 min short on there. once or twice. my office space DVD has one of them. aeon flux set has a few of other ones. like the boy and the house (titled: THOMAS AND NARDO) - which was bizarre.

i actually love old animation. i’ve been grabbing all these popeye cartoons they’ve been re-releasing. I am a big max fleischer fan. but those popeye cartoons from the 30’s - 40’s are amazing. i highly recommend them.

Well enough with being anonymous. I worked with the Green Death on this project, we know each other outside the realm of the interweb. Many thanks for the feedback all. We shopped Dimension X around a bit in hopes of a series, we had a pretty neat treatment written up but sadly Adult Swim and MTV arent interested in anything that isn’t a “character based comedy” series ala Family Guy right now. Curses. I’d love to do more stuff like Dimension X. i just haven’t gotten up the strength to tackle another big 2d project.

We’ve also worked on a few experimental shorts together , here’s a link to one of our recent ones

I loooooved Liquid Television, Aeon Flux, The Head and The Maxx. Pretty much all of mtv’s animated series from the 90’s were great. It’s sort of amazing that stuff ever got on the air, especially considering the state of that channel now. These days adult animation seems to have finally been accepted into the mainstream but much of it seems a bit juvenile or full of pop culture references. Not that that can’t have it’s place, i just miss things along the lines of Aeon Flux or the old Heavy Metal movie. Venture Bros is a step in the right direction but still seems to veer off course with a barrage of pop culture references. Love the retro Johnny Quest look and the Foetus score though!

Hey Jizzwad, I’m a big fan of Herculoids and Johnny Quest too. Loved old Space Ghost and Thundarr, pretty much any of those old cartoons with Alex Toth on character design. I always loved the animation style in those, it was subtle and they would stage the shots with a great sense of drama. They really took the time to establish mood and atmosphere. Loved the Fleischer’s too. Those old Superman shorts are just as breath taking today. And if you’re a Fleischer fan you might want to check out some of Al Columbia’s comic book work, the guy pulls off the Koko the Clown era Fleischer’s style in a lot of his work but puts a very smart, dark spin on it. The results are somewhere between hilarious and down right wrong. Worth a look!

Did/ do you really have a problem with nasa or was that just some part of the story that was just thrown in? You guys make nasa look really bad!

Ha, I hate space! Nope, no real problem with Nasa. We made this around the time the Russians were planning to shoot that kid from Nsync into space and just thought the idea of space programs having to use models or celebrities to drum up money was amusing. That would probably lead to a fair amount of corruption etc etc.

Toth… interesting i just googled him and noticed he did some stuff i own. I have have 3 season’s on DVD 70’s superfriends cartoons. (that’s all that has been released).

i also have just about all of the max fleischer Superman cartoons. and i have all of the 60’s spiderman cartoons. they’re great - the jazzy music and hip scenery. great shit.

Ha, I hate space!

really? Holy crap! you’re the first person I’ve ever (sort of) known that has said that! man when they were landing rovers and the satellites on Titan I was so freakin’ stoked!! Europa is the next big thing they expect todrill into the crust of the ice and send out a rover submarine because that planet actually has water oceans underneath all of its ice! Exciting stuff man! Well, too bad, I guess.

Only kidding grmpy, guess my sarcasmotron wasn’t turned up high enough. I love space! No hatred towards nasa, space or any o’ that business. Lotsa love for outer space exploration!

That Alex Toth by design book is absolutely beautiful. I almost stole it from someone once, aggg I wish I had. Sounds like it’s become quite a collectors item. Yeah he was a brilliant designer. An incredibly confident draftsman, totally appealing style. Are the original Space Ghost and Thundar episodes he worked on out on dvd?

Yeah I guess so. I didn’t read any sarcasm in there at all. I thought you were dead serious!

Revok may not hate NASA but I loathe them. You will find in my room a shrine dedicated to the destruction of NASA and all things NASA related (especially astronaut ice cream). It must die! I like space only when traveled to through the pure light of consciousness. Machines are far too vulgar for a refined artiste like me.

Alex Toth, however, is anything but vulgar. He’s a man whose work could make the stars sing! I remember he drew a few of those weird Archie super-hero books in the early 80s and they looked fucking amazing. I believe he drew a character named “The Fox”.
