Die Krupps Too Much History

So I just heard this compilation and I have to report that it is AWFUL. Im not sure what has been done here - if the tracks were remastered and remixed (the synths and samples at least have definitely been redone) or if the whole thing was re-recorded but it is incredible what a cold and unexciting mix they came up with for this compilation. Die Krupps had a lot of faults, naturally, but if there was one thing they were good at it was making industrial metal that was very electronic but sounded organic. A song like “Crossfire” in its original mix makes me want to mosh or something with its dynamic mix and the new version is completely lifeless.

Now, what I am trying to get at with this rant is that as it seems, remasters arent always a good idea:) Blame it on the loudness war/clipping but either way, I’m now not looking forward to an Angel Rat remaster as much as I used to…

Before gila beats me to it, I would have to add the Ryko “remasters” of the classic Revco albums. What a load of shit they sound like, especially the pre-Steers stuff. High treble, clipping, it’s awful.

die krupps… can’t listen to their albums cuz they seem silly to me. but last year they were playing here, they were super-energetic live, the place was packed. sounded much more sharp and rougher live.

on the “remaster” subject, sadly the situation won’t improve, it seems. i was disappointed in some releases, but after i’ve read a couple of steve hoffman interviews, i realized that the situation is just hopeless. if you have time to find and read 'em, check them out.

the lastest cure remasters are very well done. i think those are my only “remasters”. i highly recommend them if anyone is “on the fence” about getting them.

i also think that most “remasters” are bullshit. they don’t always pull the tape off the shelve(s). and its usually just an “eq” tweak on a 2-channel mix. to me - to get a full “remaster” i feel the tape should be pulled.
