What’s everyone’s general opinion of these guys. I imagine negative since the last thread I started had to do with 2wo. I listened to more of that band and realize why you guys hate them so much. But anyways, I recently got back into Deadsy. I used to listen to these guys in freshman year of high school(the days when I actually had a gf). I was starting to get real into the 80’s and these guys came out at the right time. I’ve only listened to Commencement and their version of Just Like Heaven. I’m real stuck on the latter right now and the few songs from Commencement that I can find on youtube. However I will give a negative criticism and say they’re not always well known for covers. Just listen to their versions of Paint It Black and Tom Sawyer. But then again no one can ever do a good job with Paint It Black and Tom Sawyer is a shitty song to begin with. But yeah I hope there’s at least some positive discussion on this one. And I’m sure anyone can say it’s better than 2wo
Why do I know OF the band? Was Cher’s kid in the band or something? I remember there’s some really stupid piece of trivia connected to this band that’s going to make me feel ashamed once I’m reminded what it was . . .
I can’t really speak to whether I like the music or not as I don’t remember a thing about it. I’ll try to give a listen later.
You are correct sir! Elijah Blue(stage name Phillips Exeter Blue I) is the son of Cher and Greg Allman. The stuff he does with Deadsy is fucking sweet considering who his parents are. No I’m not a Cher fan and never really got into the Allman Brothers Band. It’s just that Elijah’s music is a complete 360 from his parents
I liked what I heard of Deadsy but liked Orgy better for the same sort of sound (the first Orgy album is awesome).
The Deadsy guy also spent time hanging with the Hare Krishnas in LA, which makes him cool in my book (I love Hare Krishnas and spend a lot of time with them).
I listened to some of the tracks. Not something I’d go out of my way for, but it’s listenable.
And the “Paint it Black” cover is a lot better than the last version I heard . . .
i’ve always loved the sleepy hollow song. makes me wish jonathan did more syth stuff. the singer really does sound like manson…at least in that song. i’m not really familiar with their work.
i have loved these guys for years.
their two albums and then huge amount of loose songs are really solid.
the cover of Avalon is beyond beautiful…

It didn’t happen to be this version

Wow! Surprised at the Deadsy love on here. I think Peligro & co. got sick of flaming on every band that is vaguely pop/angsty/90s alt rock/could be liked by an 18 year old wearing Hot Topic.
I think Deadsy are rad. They had really cool interesting style (see vid for “Key to Gramercy Park” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWjgS4O1Aes&feature=related)
that was not the typical “goth” look.
I like their low grinding distorted bass sound and the vintage keytars. Very cool sound and aesthetic.
Yes they are similar to Orgy and the 2 bands are closely linked in a number of ways.
Deadsy is more minimal and has far less use of industrial programming (especially compared to Orgy’s ‘Candy Ass’ which is a great record) but I think they are ultimately more tasteful and more interesting because Orgy only has that one good album and most of the rest of their output it not so great especially their last album ‘Punk Static Paranoia’ which is an absolute mess recorded for a $30 budget.
I really would like to hear a new Deadsy album with an updated more modern take on the sound. The Elijah guy kind of disappeared. I think he was talking about a solo album for awhile, more acoustic type stuff. But I’m way more interested in a proper new Deadsy.
For what it’s worth Jay Gordon of Orgy is a meth addict which is why that band collapsed. He produced some guy’s awful nu metal band that opened for my band BLACKBOMBS about a month ago now…

No, it was another band that started with M . . . (hint, hint) . . . that Marduk cover is actually better than the one I’m thinking of, believe it or not.
i read jay is starting up orgy again without it’s original members…lame.
anyone like julien-k? orgy side band by amir and ryan. i saw them last year. good shit!
Good point Void about Orgy only really having one good album (I never heard anything past their second, which had two really solid tracks and the rest was poor) whereas Deadsy has a more consistent quality. Totally fair point. Still I’d argue that nothing I’ve heard by Deadsy moves me the way “Candyass” does, that album is good start to finish and captures late 90s/early 00s teen angst better than anything else out there.
I agree ‘Candy Ass’ owns.
Programming and drumming are especially great.
Looking at the credits on wikipedia I just realized Dave Ogilvie was involved in mixing it and Elijah Blue from Deadsy did some vocals and synth on a track.
I don’t think the record captures so much teen angst as an older, 20 something brooding fucked up sexuality and club drug scene.
Which is kind of where I am at the moment in life
It’s really a shame the band went to shit. I remember when their second album ‘Vapor Transmissions’ (what an awfully flaccid title at that!) came out it was kind of a ripoff of Manson going glam/alien/space themes and that single “Dreaming in Digital” was on the radio and it was just so slow, plodding and awful with a hideous prechorus dropped D riff and bad mixing.
“Suckerface” and “Message From Opticon” are decent…
If you watch their music video for the single off of ‘Punk Static Paranoia’ you will die.
the cover of Avalon is beyond beautiful…
Yet pales in comparison to Roxy Music. Anyone else pick up the new Bryan Ferry? Sounds like a logical extension of Roxy’s work in the 80’s.
@void that’s funny wit the comparison of Deadsy and Orgy bc Jay Gordon briefly played bass in the former. I was listening to more of Commencement and the album really drags on after Mansion World. I still wanna hear Phantamagore. As far as Elijah’s solo stuff I heard a track on his myspace and it just sounds like a more radio friendly Deadsy. But now I must link their version of Just Like Heaven
Orgy, Videodrone, and Deadsy always had deep ties with one another. I think Deadsy that’s why they sounded so similar. They all were pretty cool but I just think that elementree records sucked worse at promotion than even nothing records. They all kicked the shit out of staind, limp bizket or all the other competing shit at the time.
I think it’s safe to say that elementree did better than posthuman

HAHA!!!
Dear Jay:
When you go from frontman of a hugely successful million-album-selling rock band to . . . . . doing production for a band that will OPEN for the BLACKBOMBS . . . it might be time to re-assess your life.
His website is amazing, though . . . http://www.jaygordonmusic.com/

Damn that site IS pretty fucking sweet…
But dude opening for any band I’m involved in should be considered a career highlight for any entertainer.
I know grmpysmrf secretly dreams of it late night, staring into the mirror wearing his BLACKBOMBS shirt, rubbing a turd on his face…

He’ll have to beat out Godflesh in the audition process. It’s pretty much a dead heat at this point as far as I’m concerned.
