Came right here to post on this directly after seeing it on another board…jesus, it seems like the bona fide legends are dying at a clip of one a week now.
I haven’t followed his career for years now, but just saw not too long ago that there was a new album from him available, and was remarking at how little he had seemed to age. So certainly didn’t expect this one, and definitely don’t take any joy from it whatsoever.
Will try to put together a proper encomium after sleeping this off.
Someone from work posted this on our Groupme app, waking me up in the process. Now I’m having trouble sleeping because of this. Bowie’s Berlin period made a huge influence on me since my late teens. Especially “Art Decade” and “Weeping Wall.” Also tripped on salvia once while listening to “Moss Garden.” This is hitting me pretty hard. Not the way to start out a new year, that’s for sure.
What an embarrassing start of the new year.
I can’t process this news…this is devastating to me…
Sucks!
Shocked , this one hurts
So wait,Lemmy dies from cancer,Bernie Worrell is diagnosed with terminal cancer and now Bowie dies from cancer…and cancer killed my died 8 years ago…and my favorite musician of all time(Frank Zappa)cancer took out 5 of my biggest hero’s…FUCK CANCER!!!
Ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars…by far the greatest lp
Very sad news [:(] RIP
It’s almost surreal.
It’s almost surreal.
I thought that too, i never expected to hear the words “David Bowie has died”, can David Bowie actually die? Somehow it just doesn’t seem possible.
It was his birthday on January 8th, he died of cancer a couple of days after his birthday, same as Lemmy.
this is very surreal. with his new album released and all the pro-bowie posts on that record - then boom, i get up to go to work today and he’s freaking dead? what the fuck? very strange.
I’m still in shock, I had no idea he was battling cancer.
Everything he recorded is classic. He’ll always be a legend.
This is actually hurting me as well. I was already having a bit of an awkward night last night at a Verbal Abuse show that was booked by an ex lover of mine (can of worms that would be irrelevant to open right now) and then I get on Facebook. First it’s a hoax, but it wound up being for real. I didn’t cry for Lemmy. Lemmy would’ve probably told me “Stop cryin. Pour yourself a fuckin drink, man.” This is just crushing and actually leaves me asking the adolescent question, “why do our heroes have to die?”
Very sad. “Ashes to Ashes” is one of my favorites.

Zappa, Dio, Lemmy, Bowie, most of the Ramones . . .
Yeah, Cancer is a dick.
Fuck Cancer.
Blew me away when I heard this, this morning. Ive never been a megafan of Bowie, but he was always there, Ive enjoyed listening to him for a long long time. Rest in Peace.

One of my personal mentors died from pancreatic cancer not long ago and it’s still with me; each of these legends dying seems to just add to or point back to that sense of loss.
He died in a heroic fashion; flying some 20 hours from Europe to live out his final wish of being laid to rest in the Amazon jungle - I can only imagine how painful that flight and final down-river canoe ride must have been. And I come back to that constantly when I’m freaking out over some comparatively mild anxiety symptom.
As to Bowie personally, there were periods where I hardly even thought about his output, but the records of his that I do enjoy are some of the best achievements in ‘popular’ music, hands down (for me the best would be Low, Scary Monsters and Aladdin Sane).
I don’t think we’ll see a consummate showman of his like ever again. I just went back and watched the concert scene from “Wir Kinder von Bahnhof Zoo” a.k.a. “Christianne F.,” and it blows me away how little he has to do in order to completely lock in your attention…he just presses a single finger to his mic during the instrumental intro to “Station to Station” and you anticipate something dramatic and otherworldly is going to happen. I think the number of performers still possessing that borderline magical level of skill can be counted on two hands, if I’m being generous.
