I remember that guy. Have you seen Ed Wood’s “I Woke Up Early the Day I Died”?
No I haven’t…why do you ask???
I have the cd which features Clay’s Jesus I Was Evil ep plus live material and have looked everywhere trying to secure it on vinyl…I’m pretty sure the ep was released on vinyl???
He only released one ep in his short life…but wow…what a friggin fantastic ep it was.
Jesus I Was Evil is used over the opening credits. IWUETDID is the “lost” Ed Wood script that Billy Zane produced in the 90’s. Great cast, bad script, should appeal to Wood fans.
For some reason I always thought he was 20 when he topped himself?
He was brilliant.
He only released 6 songs and they were released on an “anthology” cd which feature the ep and also Darcy performing the ep songs live when he supported Blur on their NZ tour I believe?
I found it hard to find the cd…I eventually scored it from this shop in NZ…
“Smoke Notes…If you ever had the opportunity to come across the brief pop career of Darcy Clay you were the richer for it. A charasmatic and shambling performer, he had a certain ‘star’ quality, unashamedly taking his unique brand of lo-fi pop to an undesrving world. This reissue-come-anthology combines his first EP ‘Jesus I Was Evil’ (including his stunning version of the Dolly Parton classic ‘Jolene’) with a selection of tracks taken from his live support for Blur, and a bonus CD-Rom covering his short but lively charge at stardom. What becomes quickly apparent, is that his untimely death robbed the NZ music public of a very special and original personality. A genuine tragedy for all concerned.”
