Haha yeah that’s him. His 2nd album Voodoo featured an image of him topless. In an interview he mentioned that when touring that album (it made him a millionaire) his audience was mainly female and they were all yelling at him to take his shirt off. Apparently it fucked him right up psychologically and he ended up falling off the radar for years and years. Now and then the odd photo would pop up in the media of him really overweight.
If you’re familiar with his debut Brown Sugar and his 2nd LP Voodoo you’ll be aware that the man is a perfectionist with his music and that he is pretty much the greatest contemporary Soul artist on the planet. So you couldn’t help but feel ripped off that there was a chance he’d never release another record due to going mental as a result of the vast majority of his audience on the tours not being there for the music but for his abs haha In hindsight he knows the cover for Voodoo was a mistake. In saying that it might not of made him a millionaire had he not been on the cover with his shirt off. Anyway you look at it the cover resulted in him being tossed in with such awful acts like Usher and other such so called R’n’B folk who I’m pretty sure do not write their music or play any instruments etc
But yeah at the end of the day with no promo he finally dropped one hell of an album on the people who are here for the music…and for that we are thankful.
