Dan O'Bannon 1946-2009

Fans of ‘Dark Star’, ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Total Recall’ will know about Dan.

Fuck, I missed this post and did not know. What a bummer!

Yeah I saw, that it totally sucks he was still pretty young. Dan was working on the next Alien script which was a prequel to the original movie which would have gone to the Alien’s homeworld. It will probably be made anyway, but the francise needed his touch I think.

…a prequel to the original movie which would have gone to the Alien’s home world…

I like this idea. but I don’t know how good this could be. THe aliens are a bunch of hunters I can’t really imagine the planet of their origin being all that exiting. it’s not like these things are gonna have city council meetings or any type of civilization. maybe they are the roaches of their home planet and the superior beings are just as violent but also have a conscience… I would love to know how this will turn out.

What intrigues me is the prospect of the race of giants (The Space Jockey) from the derelict ship who picked up the aliens from wherever to begin with. What’s their story???

From what I understand Ridley Scott is set to direct this new film which is fine by me. Hopefully HR Giger will be invited to contribute to this one as well instead of just a bunch of FX guys bastardizing his style.

I read before that Scott’s new Alien film would concentrate on the Space Jockey’s race; how they came to be attacked by the alien parasites and also the “company’s” knowledge of the aliens before the Nostromo came on the scene. It could be a brilliant movie (once Scott doesn’t go for the slow motion shots he used in Gladiator). The discovery of the Space Jockey and the alien egg nest is one of the best sci-fi scenes of all time and it was all Giger’s work so it would indeed be cool if he got to work on the new one. Who knows though, we probably won’t get a snippet of anything insightful for another year or so.

RIP Dan. Sci-Fi has lost one of it’s greats.

Looking forward to the new Scott Alien movie. As long as they get a decent script it should be good.

I really wish Jodorowsky would have been able to release his vision of Dune, but unfortunately it went to Lynch, and as much as I love Lynch he really bombed on that one.

The fact that Jodo didn’t get to do Dune is one of the major tragedies of modern culture. It would have come out before Star Wars, had a soundtrack by Pink Floyd, featured Salvador Dali as emperor of the universe and been a huge budget Jodorowsky movie. I don’t say this about much, but I honestly believe the world we live in would be different if that movie had been made.

Hopefully this thing will be a solid addition to the Alien trilogy. The Aliens homeworld should be interesting, hopefully they work in some Marines or something into the script or an army of potentialy malfunctioning 120 A-2’s (androids) a la Ash. [laugh]

You’re right on the money, green death. Jodorowsky’s ‘Dune’ is easily the best film that was never made. It being released before Star Wars could possibly have engendered a different cinema/media culture, a one more mature and wholly more welcome than what played out (dependent on how successfully it would have been received within a few years of its release of course.) An alternate 1970s-2000s cinema culture riding on the back of a magnificent ‘Dune’ merits academic study.
