Hahahahaha!!
Does this mean they’re no longer a cult band? I’ve listened to clips of the new album and it sounds good. ‘The Water Glass’ sounds like a monster.

It isn’t.
I’ve heard the new album and it’s far from impressive. A load of sloppy, half baked ideas slapped together to vaguely form ‘songs’. About half of it is downright unlistenable crap. Even Nude With Boots, as tame as it was, is light years ahead.
Don’t get me wrong, I love noise music, however there is an fine line between noise as a respected artform and music that is just plain noisy. With Bride Screamed Murder, The Melvins have not only crossed that line but, in the words of Marge Simpson, they’ve thrown up all over it.
The Melvins have done weird before and done it a whole lot better (check Honky if you are struggling to believe me at this point). This time around it would seem that the joke is finally on them.
The new album is a 3 out of 5 as far as Melvins go…it is far from “weird” though??? It is yet another Melvins/Big Business straight forward rock album that happens to feature one leftfield song (PG13) and a few loony toon outros.
I’m really hoping this is it for the Melvins/Big Biz studio collaboration personally…3 albums is enough…Melvins OWN as a 3 piece!!!
If The Bride Screamed Murder was released by any other band it would a solid release…however Melvins are capable of better. Regardless TBSM seems to be getting good reviews for the most part and the tour has been killer so far…the setlist for the tour has been incredible!!!
I listened the album through and… yeah… it will hardly win album of the year. The second song was nice and meaty, the last song was actually the most interesting but then they fucked it up at the end with all that pointless counting/talking.

Yeah Melvins do like to try our patience. The story about PG13 is actually quite interesting…
What’s the story behind “P.G. X 3”?
BUZZ: Well, there’s a movie called The Proposition, and the screenplay was written by Nick Cave. It’s basically an Australian western and in that movie, one of the criminals sings that song a capella—differently than the way we did it though. I couldn’t wait to get the soundtrack because I thought that was such a powerful song. They didn;t put it on the record though! I don’t know why; it’s the best thing on there. So I was like, “We’ve gotta fucking record that song!” It’s an old traditional song, hundreds of years old that nobody has any idea who wrote—one of those Irish folk tunes or some bullshit. I think Sinead O’Connor did a version of it. It’s all certainly different than mine. I listened to a bunch of versions of that song; my favorite of all of them was the way it was done in the movie. So, using that version as an example of what to do, that’s what we did.
Heard the album for the first time…
yeah it ‘passable’ I suppose. But generally when I think of the Melvins, ‘passable’ is a word I would rarely associate with them.
Disappointing - as Akbar said, dump Big Business ASAP and go back to being a three piece.
The last few albums aren’t bad. Not bad at all.
But they’re sort of lacking that… I dunno. I always noticed there a few songs that just blew your mind on a Melvins record. Haven’t really had that feeling since A Senile Animal.
Still would stick by them. Anything they’re doing is comparatively 10x better than their contemporaries half their age.
I don’t mind their newer material. But personally I prefer pre 2000 Melvins. I think the last few great albums they put out were that Trilogy thing on Ipecac. Especially The Maggot.
I remember seeing the Melvins in '92 when Joe Preston was in the band and thinking that they were the future of heavy music as we know it.

For me they still are the future of “heavy” music…infact they’re one of the few “heavy” bands I actually listen to nowadays.
When Big Biz depart the Melvins I’m 100% confident we’ll get brilliant Melvins albums again rather than solid rock albums.
The Trilogy was definately the last “brilliant” thing they released. The vinyl boxset of that is my pride and joy. Bootlicker is my fave of them.
Edit : Hostile Ambient Take Over was also “brilliant”!!! As was the vinyl release of it on multi 7"s!!!
