Covers that are better than the originals

Wow! I never realized that “Better By You, Better Than Me” was a cover. I’m sure it’s better than the original, but I’m gonna go check now . . .

Pretty ironic that they were on trial for a song that wasn’t even their’s…yeah I know it was about the “backward masking” portion of the song but still…so retarded…

[reply]the shizit just one fix ( ministry )
alexisonfife sweet leaf ( sabbath )
jane’s addiction sympathy ( the rolling stones )

None of these are better…[/reply]

Or even good.

Fuck me, how could I forget this one:

COIL - Tainted Love (cover of a cover?)

Probably helps that I was burned out on the Soft Cell version in the early '80s. Also, the video for the COIL version is one of my favorite Wax Trax videos.

1002

Totally agree. The song is more fitting for the context Coil was going for IMO. Also Marc Almond from Soft Cell makes a cameo in the video, which is pretty cool.

Yeah, people think of Marc Almond as a pop guy, but he was very involved in that whole early '80s industrial UK scene with Coil, Psychic TV, Current 93, etc.

Metallica - The Wait
Killing Joke - The Wait

I think it’s a draw.

I’ll try…

  1. “Same Old Scene” - Ministry (of course)
  2. “Personal Jesus” - Marilyn Manson
  3. “Rock On” - Def Leppard
  4. “Ashes To Ashes” - Tears For Fears
  5. “Mad World” - Gary Jules
  1. “Mad World” - Gary Jules

yes

Marvin Berry & the Starlighters featuring Marty McFly - Johnny B. Goode

Fu Manchu - Godzilla

Primus - Have A Cigar (Pink Floyd)

Primus - Have A Cigar (Pink Floyd)

Blasphemer.

Cocksure - Harold and Cindy Hospital.

I wouldn’t say they’re all “better”, but Metallica is definitely consistently good with their covers. Their strength at it is testified in the fact that many if not most of the covers are thought by the Average Joe to be originals. And with that, I would put up their covers of “BREADFAN”, “AM I EVIL?”, and “STONE COLD CRAZY”.

Yeah prologue, you might wanna give disc 1 of Garage Inc a spin before you say Metallica are the greatest cover band of all time. Once you hear their version of “Sabbra Cadabra,” or their Mercyful Fate medley, you’ll welcome the blasphemy of my preference of Primus’ version of “Have A Cigar” to the original with open arms.

Im going with eureka on this one. The mix is better. Les’ voice fits the song much better. The bass is definitely better. Dont get me wrong i like Floyd’s original but i think Primus’ is far superior. In that same vein i think making plans for nigel is far far better than the original. That whole miscellaneous debris release is peobably primus’ finest output.

I love both versions but all I will say is Primus live is a completely different animal than on record…as a live band they are just astounding…I see them basically every tour and just saw them last month…they continue to get weirder, nore expansive and more adept at their instruments with each tour…avant-garde and strange yet accessible…each time I think they can’t get better they manage to somehow up the ante…I know they are a polarizing band and quite frankly I sometimes tire of them when listening to their recorded output…but seeing them live is a completely different excperince…

“. . . . by the curse of the PHARAOHH-WHOOAAA. YEAAAAYEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!”

And Primus is outstanding live.

Thats an understatement of the year contender. The first time i saw them was on the willy wonka tour. Damn, that was insanely good. Ive never done acid but i can imagine that will be the closest i will get without actually doing a tab. Who knew that surreal art had a sound. Primus are fantastic and ill catch them every time they tour my yard.

I may die a grievous death because of this but I think 1000 Homo DJ’s version of Supernaut is better than the mighty Black Sabbath’s.

It is an excellent cover (and arguably better than the original . . . . even though we’re talking about SABBATH) so I forgive your so-called blasphemy on this one.

I actually like the Mercyful Fate medley. I’m not sure it’s better than the original or not but I do like it.

No way is it better, but it is good.
And one of the things I’ve always loved about Metallica was their ability to inspire people to look into these other bands. How many kids discovered the Misfits via Metallica? Answer: Lots.
