For anyone who hates Pantera, try watching a bit of 3 Vulgar Videos From Hell, it is hilarious and might make you look a little bit more favourably on them, if not on their music.
We used to watch those all the time! A few of us still yell THREEEEEE whenever someone scratches their ear.[/reply]
Haha, yeah, there was a lot of “THREEEE!” in my house too. I used to get hammered, smoke loads of weed and watch those 3 shows back to back until the early hours. Really funny stuff, i think the best bit is Kirk Windstein as “Hulk Blood” smashing the backstage area to pieces.
too many funny moments in those videos…
and the russia concert is insane… the dvd has a few songs as a bonus extra
dimevision vol 1 is funny as well and has lots of interestiing stuff from their early days… big mashups of ozzy songs and a version of floods performed during their glam era

Yeah, Dimevison’s class, the standout moments for me were Dime’s impression of Jack Russell from Great White, and the Maypop tires thing they did. Floods is amazing, and, yeah, the Russia show is outstanding [:)]
I’m really particular in my Pantera-related opinions. I like that kind of aggro-glam stuff they were doing in their pre-Phil days. I HATE their macho-man inbred trailer park fratmetal they did WITH Phil.
However, I’m not a Phil-hater. I think Phil is a rad dude and a great frontman. I think he’s (at least now) down to Earth, grounded, honest, and legitimately a guy that stands by his ideals. I just don’t care for much of his “music”.
However, I do think he’s got a good voice (he just rarely shows it). The time that it really shines for me is when he sings Sabbath tunes. He absolutely NAILS IT (not something I say about most people that try to sing Ozzy/Sabbath songs).
If Phil just made a kickass Sabbath tribute band I would buy a ticket every time.
To me the real hardcore hipsters are not the ones who try to find ever more obscure / undiscovered forms of expression (mainly music), but the ones that only enjoy ANYTHING insofar as they can make some ironic, bitter comment on it…
This. I was unaware what the term meant until a co-worker called me a hipster a few years ago. I just thought it was someone who went out their way to be “hip” by choice of clothing style.
I was informed that it describes someone who has a lot of knowledge in niche subjects-particularly music. After some online investigation, I had to explain to my co-worker that I don’t make snotty sarcastic comments regarding someone’s lack of knowledge when it comes to discussing music, and thus, not making me hipster.

Okay, I guess I’m not much of a hipster either, then. I’m glad that, with respect to a very small number of bands/topics, I know more than others. It makes me feel good and I’m happy to be able to help others who may want to get some guidance on checking out a particular genre or band or something or need help with “what was that one album with that one song with that guy where it goes . . .?” And I certainly don’t think it gives me any superiority over anyone or such. If anything, I’ve always kept my obsessions in perspective and realized that they’re just quirks on my side and sometimes actually kind of embarrassing.
I am a smartass fairly ironic dick, though (another reason I thought that I might be a hipster). But that’s truly just to amuse myself and there’s no particular angle or agenda to it. I’ll make fun of myself more than anyone else, in fact, and that’s simply because I’m always around and there’s not always someone else to dog on.

Is that on the IOMMI album (the one from about 15 years ago that had like 8 or so different guest vocalists)? I have that disc SOMEWHERE but haven’t listened to it (or come across is) in a while. I don’t remember a Phil track specifically, but I do remember some cool songs on it.

The tracks he did with Tony Iommi were fantastic!

Yeah,it had Ian Astbury and Peter Steele and a bunch of others…it’s got some cool songs on it but I find his album called Fused to be way superior…really fucking good,in fact…Glenn Hughes does all the vocals and his work is off the charts on it…they did another one called the DEP Sessions…it’s good also but Fused is better…

Yeah, again I feel like there’s a significant difference between just a culture snob / elitist and a hipster, even though they might at first be indistinguishable in mode of dress, verbal mannerisms etc. Simply put, the elitist is still passionate about whatever cultural gold brick he or she wants to beat over the heads of the less understanding. Hipsters don’t seem to ‘genuinely’ enjoy anything but pointing out the futility of being passionate.
Maybe one candidate for the original hipsters were the ‘eiron’ characters in ancient Greek theater (where we get the term ‘irony’ from) - basically stock comic characters who always deflated the pride of supposedly more knowledgeable characters.
I do my best not to ‘ironically’ enjoy anything, but merely to appreciate things on different levels. I enjoy Beethoven’s 5th symphony for more sublime reasons than I enjoy laughing at 3rd-rate cock rock or the Vanilla Ice movie, but I’m enjoying these things all the same - I can only backpedal on that so much. If I was truly ‘above’ them I wouldn’t even be wasting time on enjoying their comical features.

That’s the one, tried listening to it once and didn’t care for it apart from Ozzy’s contribution and Phil’s. From what i’ve heard Tony and Phil made 3 tracks together, only 1 appears on the album though, i believe it’s this one;

Oh, if that’s the working definition I am DEFINITELY a hipster.
Remember Justin Broadrick’s remixes? I loved the Hostile one. Apparently Dime was crazy about it
Yeah, that was the Walk remix thing…Broadrick did Fucking Hostile and By Demons be Driven…he had a period where he was a rather in demand as far as remixes went…anytime you see Biomechanical mix listed somewhere chances are it’s him…

I’m not sure I even know HOW to ironically enjoy something. Is that like masochism or something? Ahhhhh, this band is shit! I’m gonna listen to all their albums.
I mean, I enjoy stuff like William Hung’s and Hulk Hogan’s albums for their comedic value. But is there any other way to enjoy them? Am I being ironic. I just like laughing at stuff. I mean, I’m not going to join any fan clubs or stand in line for concert tickets or anything . . . or am I?
The only thing I guess I’ve seen and have heard is a hipster thing that does kind of piss me off with respect this “ironic” business, is when they get some old band t-shirt and think it’s funny because it’s NOT cool, thereby making them cool because of how not cool it is (am I getting the gist of it). I find it annoying because I like a lot of those bands and the hipster dumbshits that play this game (ironically at a pretty high price from vintage shops sometimes) a. are wearing shirts that they have no business wearing and make my beloved bands look stupid because of the jackass wearing the shirt . . . and b) I have similar shirts and sometimes hipster jackasses think I’m being “ironic” or funny by wearing them.
There is nothing “ironic” about my W.A.S.P.* shirt which features a picture of Blackie Lawless holding a skull dripping blood. I wear it because W.A.S.P. rules and the picture is AWESOME!
There is also nothing “ironic” about any of my Twisted Sister shirts. I wear stuff that I’m willing to get in a fight over. That’s not irony. It’s commitment.
Where was I going with this? Crap. I don’t really remember.
Regarding hipsters being an LA (or other big metros) thing, though . . . yeah, I guess I get that now. In LA is where someone might actually think my T-shirts are a joke. 50 miles east . . . I get genuine compliments and high-fives which often lead to extended conversations about upcoming shows, favorite albums, etc.
The place where my NOT-ironic t-shirts get the most love. Vegas. No one has any business being ironic in Vegas. You’re either there to have a good time, or you’re in the wrong place. That place must be pure Hell for hipsters.
A line got blurred somewhere. You used to get stuff like Kevin Smith which would drop these knowingly lazy references to things like star wars, which at the time was refreshing because there were a growing number of us who hadn’t been sent off to read the classics and our points of reference were pop culture things like star wars
But somewhere along the line it became the standard and ironic veneration is now a bit grating IMO
