Was his real name MANTAN? Because if so, that’s gotta be the greatest name I’ve ever heard.

The greatest mystery of them all.
Personally I think what happened is that these guys got off course and stumbled into an area where the Russian Army was testing chemical weapons and subsequently went mad.
Be interested to hear what everyone else here makes of it.

Thanks for the links Peligro I have not heard of that incident before, but it is very fascinating. The weird state the bodies were found in is disturbing. The avalanche scenario given in the 1st link sounds plausible, but I think you are probably right about it being some sort of military exercise these campers ran afoul of.
I would recommend the R.A. Wilson book Everything Is Under Control, an encyclopedia of some of the most far out conspiracy theories pre-911. One of my favorite parts is about Howard Hughes having a ham sandwich hidden in a particular tree every night waiting for him to walk by.

My favorite conspiracy nut is Francis E. Dec, truly bizarre:

I love this sort of stuff, and while generally skeptical of some things I subscribe to the old adage “I don’t believe in ghosts, but I am afraid of them”.

you’d think that the dude running one of those sites could get in touch with some of those authors/reporters that had their work censored and throw it up on the net.

nut!!!
that boy in the box story is really quite sad!
Two moon theory… I don’t know if it’s because it’s where you are on the planet or what but here in Cali we don’t get two moons, I mean occasionally we can see the moon during the day but not often and living in the desert where I do, there is at least once a month where it is pitch black because there is no moon to speak of and other nights it’s damn near day time at night the moon is so bright
the tide thing is an interesting angle though for sure!

Keep in mind, Wilson was a deliberate mindfucker. Some of the stuff in that book is unequivocally untrue. For example, he treats Abdul Alhazrad and The Necronomicon as if they weren’t just fictions created by H.P. Lovecraft.

Why does Hollywood insist on making lame films when stories like this are about?

I was thinking the same thing. Take a little truth and mix it in with fiction and they won’t have to keep recycling stories!.

I was wondering about that chicks tongue… was it actually cut out like with a knife or scissors or maybe she chewed it off herself? I could imagine if you were cold enough you may not be able to feel your tongue and could possibly chew it off and swallow it.

I haven’t read the story yet, but just the comments on it tell me it’s gonna be a special treat when I get the energy to go through it.
I was wondering about that chicks tongue… was it actually cut out like with a knife or scissors or maybe she chewed it off herself? I could imagine if you were cold enough you may not be able to feel your tongue and could possibly chew it off and swallow it.
I can’t see someone chewing off and swallowing their own tongue.
Anyway, I don’t think any traces of it were found in her stomach.
Perhaps, after she died, she was scavenged by wild animals - but why would they only touch her tongue?
Why were some of them found in their underwear and others were found wearing each others clothes? What made them run away and leave the campsite? If it was poisonous gasses as some have suggested, then wouldn’t they have just succumbed? Why would they run away in their underwear and then make a camp fire somewhere else? Why did some of them attempt to go back to the campsite? Why did their hair turn grey?
Was it an avalanche? Surely not. Avalanches occur all the time and don’t leave as much of a mystery as this. And if it was only an avalanche then why was the area sealed off for years after the ‘accident’?
I have heard that for years and years beforehand, earlier inhabitants refused to go anywhere near the place. They equated the place with death and feared it. Why? What killed them and left no discernible trace?
$100 to anyone who thinks they can solve this.
I think I can solve it. Can I have my $100?
I can’t see someone chewing off and swallowing their own tongue.
Even if it was so cold they couldn’t feel it? Maybe kept biting on it to make sure it was still there? kinda how when your foot falls asleep and you can’t feel it you keep touching it.
Anyway, I don’t think any traces of it were found in her stomach.

animals had to have eaten it in some fashion cause with that type of cold you figure it would’ve been preserved and found.
Why were some of them found in their underwear and others were found wearing each others clothes?
Yeah I was wondering this as well. if it really was as cold as it’s described, there is no way that anybody would’ve been sleeping in their underwear in their tents. Tents don’t keep any cold out it just keeps the wind out and bugs from crawling on you so the whole “down to yer skivvies to go to sleep” sounds like bullshit.

Maybe they got fucked up on shrooms and did it to themselves?

Good question, which makes the average reader think someone somewhere knows.

Insane. Why I’ve never read this before is beyond me. Chilling stuff.
For once, I am at a loss. Perhaps something scared them, they got disorientated and then things went downhill from there. But there are bits and pieces that just don’t add up.
They were all experienced hikers as well. You could imagine that perhaps one person in the group would possibly freak out because of the cold or whatever, but all of them at the same time?? Something really must have scared them for the tent to be ripped open from the inside and for experienced hikers to run around in their underwear and then be found dead with broken bones but no signs of violence on their exteriors. And there were no avalanches reported in the area nor any signs of an avalanche when their bodies were eventually found.
And why try and cover up an avalanche that killed a bunch of hikers?
Peligro has won this thread.
Honourable mention to killface for his response. Fucking best [laugh]

HAHAHAHAHA!!!
I too think I can solve it.
I’ve PMed you my paypal account address to pop the money in Peligro.
Yeah, killface’s monster was pretty funny!
He looked so angry though… or maybe that was hunger!
