Quite a lineup that afternoon/evening: The Fixx, Simple Minds, A Flock Of Seagulls, Joan Jett, Ministry, and The Police.
It appears that it was also the very first show of The Police’s Synchronicity world tour, so several of their more famous hits would have made their live debut that evening.
I gather that Al and Sting didn’t share the same dressing room.
Able to recall only a few vague memories. As we were a last minute replacement our dressing room accommodations were spartan. Just a small room in a trailer parked just outside old Comiskey Park just beyond the centerfield grandstand. It was a beautiful day so nobody spent any time in the dressing room. We played first…just after noon, no soundcheck. Couldn’t hear much of anything in the monitors. All I could hear was a dull noise reverberating through a cavernous stadium. The crowd seemed to enjoy it. Since it was a hometown gig there were a lot of friends/girlfriends/etc backstage. I think I grabbed a plate of food after the set and left shortly thereafter with my then girlfriend and current wife and an old friend who was driving. We went back to our apartment on the Northside without ever seeing The Police or any of the other bands. I think the rest of the band hung around but I have no idea how long they stayed.
She’s always rocked…its not stuff I sit around and listen to but she has always embodied the spirit of rock n roll…way back to The Runaways days…gotta be a real knob to boo her…
I can’t recall exactly what happened…but I think I was probably in a, “I’d rather be in Lake View in our nice apartment than wandering around Comiskey Park in the midday sun after playing a short set that felt rushed and nearly inaudible” kinda mood. I didn’t mind the other bands at all. I’m not genre-centric. I love it all.
Saw her at a tiny club in NYC a few years ago for a record release party. Didn’t know anything but the big hits, but she sure put on a show. For a bunch of aging musicians with no shtick and no light show, they were riveting.
