COIL

Love me some Coil - big time.

Am going through a massive Coil kick at the moment - it’s worse than a caffeine addiction I swear. Recently just splashed out greedily on a few new items but still need more. So far I have :

Black Antlers
The Remote Viewer
Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil
Live One
Scatology
Unnatural History III
Musick To Play In The Dark Vol I
Musick To Play In The Dark Vol II
…And The Ambulance Died In His Arms
The New Backwards
Windowpane 12"

Anyone else share this Coil affliction? Anyone else have a healthy sized Coil collection? Recommend me some more Coil not listed here? I have heard that Horse Rotorvator and Black Light District are worth shelling out for…! Anyone here heard those?

Yes:

Moon’s Milk in Four Phases
The Snow EP
Time Machines

Love

Horse Rotorvator is good.
I also like those early Zos Kia/Coil recordings. I think the only album available from that lineup is called “Transparent”.

i’m a big coil nerd too. my collection is pretty decent and still building as i have a used record store in my town that i find 1 or 2 random old coil vinyls a year. recently grabbed the worship the glitch 2x10" for $8. i couldn’t believe my eyes. The first coil album i ever heard was Horse Rotorvator and i still love it. Ostia from it is by far my favorite coil track. My other fav albums are Musick to play in the dark 1 and the moons milk series. and i was pleasantly surprised with the new backwards. some of their other stuff is hit or miss for me but i do appreciate how their sound changes throughout the years.

http://wassonii.blogspot.com/ has basically everything they have ever released and then some. great live archive of coil and christopherson’s side projects as well. enjoy.

specialed, did u ever meet these guys back in the day?

I have ‘Unnatural History II’ which I find excellent.

A lot of the stuff is very dark and/or beautiful. Really experimental instrumental stuff with an eerie vibe.

Great for late nights.

‘The Snow EP’ wasn’t as impressive to me. Kind of subdued techno electronica vibe. It’s alright.

i like both musiks to play in the dark and also live 2 and 4. they performed twice in russia and i missed them both times. and now balance is dead :frowning: but i checked out the special show by christopherson in jhonn’s honor, it was good.

Huge Coil fan, have a pretty big collection including some old first pressing cd’s that sadly seem to be the victim of disc rot (especially “Gold is the Metal”)

I’d highly reccomend Black Light District, it still remains one of my favorite Coil albums today.
Other ones to check out

Stolen and Contaminated songs
Scatalogy demos (considerably different)
Astral Disaster
Worship the Glitch (Coil vs Elph)

also the old Songs of the Week compilation is fantastic, I think you can only find that on file sharing sites but it’s definitely worth researching for a bunch of rare unreleased and fantastic material.

Time Machines is one of my favorite albums. LSD is amazing too as is much of the rest of their catalog. I find that “Ape of Naples” is an underrated classic, gorgeous sound and not a lot of the waffling that marred some of the later releases (IMO, of course)

It’s funny, over on the Skinny Puppy Litany Forum, COIL are worshipped like you wouldn’t believe - yet they rarely even register a mention over here…or most other places for that matter. Sadly, users on most forums like this are more likely to discuss the new Marilyn Manson or some other techno industrial schlock wannabe (hello Nine Inch Nails!) and completely ignore the genuinely more fascinating, sonically creative and intellectual acts like Coil.

Oh well.

My faves are…

Horse Rotorvater
Moon’s Milk
Astral Disaster
Restitution Of Decayed Intelligence 10"
Worship The Glitch
The Remote Viewer
Musick To Play In The Dark Vol I

Because there’s a division of sorts there, between what is still ‘rock’ and the less song structured nature of some material.
I don’t mind the Coil I’ve personally heard but it hasn’t really caught me yet I guess. I love the cut on the Pathological comp ‘Contains a disclaimer’, but wasn’t too enthralled by the ‘odds & sods’ styled Coil release it was on. And of course like any band with a reasonable and varied discog, there’s bound to be good and bad.

There’s a great Coil track on the ‘emre [dark matter]’ compilation called ‘Broken Aura’. Worth checking out

I’ve yet to hear a Coil album that I hated - although the occasional track (especially their 80’s output) will make me shudder.

Trust me - there’s no ‘Last Sucker’ equivalent in the Coil back catalogue!!

For those interested, Important Records (a great label) just yesterday released a limited to 500 pressing of Coil & the New Blockaders & Vortex campaign - “The Melancholy Mad Tenant” on vinyl. I’m sure it well sell out fairly quickly as it did on cd a couple years back.

Important is fucking awesome. That’s where the better part of my (small) Merzbow collection’s come from.

So are Ian Brady and Myra Hindley.

Or maybe because someone like the original poster just had to make a thread to discuss it, so that those who were too lazy to start a thread can chime in? Like me, for example? [laugh]

Chris Connelly contributed a track to the ‘It Just Is: Tribute To Jhonn Balance’ double cd which I’d like to hear. I really love Coil and Jhonn is sadly missed. His likeness will most likely never be repeated.

By the way, whatever happened to Chris Connelly? Didn’t he post here from time to time? I’d like to hear his sentiments regarding Coil.

The ‘Unreleased Themes From Hellraiser’ 12" often rears its’ head on ebay from time to time. I haven’t heard it but it does pique my curiousity somewhat.

As for the movie itself…what an overrated abomination.

Don’t bother with the Hellraiser 10" unless you’re a collector - the tracks are available with a lot of other stuff on one of the Unnatural History collections.
