cleopatra

I actually have the VHS tape to vol.2 (i think its vol 2) that had a bunch of the videos. Gunnar, i really hate that B6 thunderstruck track. They have so many better tracks starting with police state, and you cannot walk here.

True. Probably the MOST appropriate title would have been “Ministry, Throbbing Gristle, and Every Band That Currently Exists on Any Cleopatra Release.”

There were some that were so thinly related, if at all. Like, I think Cleo had just re-pressed a Faster Pussycat CD or something, so they were like, “Oh, Faster Pussycat? Yeah, they were very influential on the Industrial scene!”

The guy who wrote it (Dave Thomas, I think) also wrote the liner notes to all Cleo’s industrial compilations, and it was clear that he BARELY knew what he was talking about. Aside from the shameless Cleopatra promotion, he had a hard-on for prog rock bands so there were big entries on King Crimson and shit like that. He also insisted on calling synthpop “synthi-pop”. As far as I know, he’s the only person on earth that ever did that.

As for the compilations, the very first Industrial Revolution was actually an excellent overview of the genre’s history. Cleopatra had to revise it when TVT bought Waxtrax and made them take all those bands off. So the revised edition is still pretty good, but has an unfortunate number of no-name Cleopatra bands jammed in there because they had to remove KMFDM and whoever. Volume 2 was pretty much a standard Cleo comp with a few interesting tracks from other labels sprinkled in.

I typed this the last time we discussed this book:

Faster Pussycat isn’t in Industrial Revolution, at least not the edition of it I have. Here are all the artists with full entries or redirects (there are far too many redirects):

There were some that were so thinly related, if at all. Like, I think Cleo had just re-pressed a Faster Pussycat CD or something, so they were like, “Oh, Faster Pussycat? Yeah, they were very influential on the Industrial scene!”

For what it’s worth, Faster Pussycat guitarist ‘Taime Downe’ (get it?!) was a touring member of Pigface. Who knows how it even came about; I doubt it was anything more complicated than him buying Martin Atkins an O’doul’s after a gig and asking if he could come and ‘jam’ for a few shows.

But as far as any actual ‘influence’ goes - I can’t imagine that, unless it was members of industrial bands watching FP’s turn in “Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years” while on the tour bus (and that’s just required viewing, period…)

And who could forget [url http://www.discogs.com/Vanilla-Ice-Vanilla-Ice-Is-Back-Hip-Hop-Classics/release/3555333]this titan of industrial culture, the foundation stone upon which we build our mighty fortress of armed audio warfare.

Yeah, yeah, I know about Taime touring with Pigface and ditching the Steven Tyler scarves and putting on some Genitorturers’ style bondage cop uniform instead.

I think that’s why I thought he was in that book. Probably we had joked about it before.

Thanks to whomever mentioned the King Krimson stuff. That was pretty funny. It made me remember the TANGERINE DREAM inclusion when I read that (and properly confirmed by dust’s list).

I’m going to assume that the ADDED bands in the follow up edition(s) were on discs later added to the Cleo catalog and they by default became necessary chapters in this great saga of industrial music history.

Oh, and I know pretty much ALL “industrial” artists put Donna Summer as their #1 influence as well.

Taime Downe always seemed like such a douche-hole…

Even his name alone suggests that he’s a total dipshit [:)]

On the other hand, the version of Suck he did on Feels Like Heaven… Sounds Like Shit is fantastic.

Birmingham 6’s “Thunderstruck” is badass. Pisses all over Ministry’s version.

And yeah, they had a handful of tribute albums in the mid 90’s that I thought were actually pretty cool, especially “Covered in Black: An Industrial Tribute to AC/DC” (that had the Birmingham 6 “Thunderstruck” track on it, which was easily the best on the disc).

I thought Godflesh’s For Those About To Rock was amazing. Thunderstruck is a class song!

I checked out the B 6 version. I found it interesting but you can’t make Thunderstruck good. The tune is just cringe worthy for me.[/reply]

Ah I remember that now. I think that ended up becoming the template for a great live version in Chicago, which was little more than Ogre on vocals and a droning sitar - at some point in one of the last verses he also modified a line to “one thousand Trent Reznors imitating me”

Birmingham 6’s “Thunderstruck” is badass. Pisses all over Ministry’s version.

The only good version of thunderstruck is ACDC’s version everything else is a waste of time.
As a matter of fact that cover may be the only B6 song I don’t like.

Has anybody else noticed that between Al and Angie’s FB posts, it appears something is wrong? Angie is constantly posting items or sayings referring to needing strength and support.

And does anybody know why they moved to LA?

My guess is that they are fling for bankruptcy. Selling of the ranch, selling the rights to Cleopatra, etc.

Thoughts?
