Chris Connelly - Artificial Madness

A break down of the songs, lyrically speaking. Good for laughs.

Pretty cool to read that… definitely looking forward to hearing the album!

Very guitar heavy. Crank it up.

Just got around to finally checking out samples. Sounds very interesting.

I usually dig Chris’ solo stuff a lot. This board tends to be kinda eh about 'em, so the way you guys are talking this one up, I’m stoked. The last Connelly stuff I heard was High Confessions, which is great, and whatever the record was that had “Mirror Lips” on it. I love that fucking song. Great vibraphone. Or is it marimba? Hm.

I love his solo work. Only a few albums I could live without (shipwreck, etc). This sounds very different, but not in a bad way. Anxious to hear more.

Very fucking cool track! reminds me of early Billy Duffy Cult material, great stuff!

I like almost everything Chris has put out, some tracks are duds but I think most of it holds up.

This is out today.
Haven’t gotten it yet, but I figured it deserved to be bumped.

Chris should have been more “novel” and released it on 11.11.11

I think I’ll get it through bandcamp, as I don’t like itunes (even though their version has two extra tracks) for getting money they don’t deserve.

Scooped it up this morning. Really good after a couple listens. Safe bet that this has Buck Satan by a long shot.

In the past two days, three of the most noteworthy albums of 2011 were released - Artificial Madness, Crazy Clown Time (David Lynch), and Solaris (B. Frost & D. Bjarnason)

Just ordered my copy from Relapse (nice and cheap!) I haven’t been excited for a rock album in a long time. The three songs I’ve already heard have all been excellent.

Lame about the itunes only bonus tracks though. If anyone knows where to find those, let me know…

Bonus tracks are alright. One being a remix.

I’ve given the new CC album a few spins through. It’s great fun and it does pretty much what Connelly said it was going to do.

It starts in excellent fashion; those pulses and then right into ‘Artificial Madness’. It’s got the right contrast between verses and chorus. It sets the standard for most of the album - fast crashing drums and frenetic guitars.

‘Wait for Amateur’ is also great fun and has a “single” vibe about it. A fun song if you need to wake up.

More time is taken with ‘Classically Wounded’ and the guitars get even more unhinged on this one. Definitely one for the air guitar enthusiast. But possible insulting interpretation aside it’s a quality number.

‘Cold Blood in Present Company’ gets a bit uglier with a more prominent bass. The chorus may be fairly generic but it does the business all the same.

The highlight of the album is ‘Compatibility’; a seriously fucking cool song with the best guitars, bass, and drums & perc. It clocks in as the longest but weathers well. Connelly goes high on this one and I think it’s maybe his best vocal on the album.

‘Modern Swine’ reverts back to the short, fast fury of the first two songs. Connelly goes fairly Bowie on the chorus. Song is grand, does the job.

‘Imperfect Star’ might be the most melodic number. Connelly croons more on this one. I’d rank it somewhere in the middle.

‘Paraffin Hearts’ lets the lyrics ring out more and there’s a certain attempt to allow the words and vox take over on this one. Many will like it. Not too pushed about it myself.

The next two, ‘The Subjects’ and ‘The Goner’ are two brief shots of the same order with the latter being the stronger. They smack a bit of filler though. They’ve got energy but not much else.

The closer ‘A Career In Falsehood’ is a moody affair and sounds more twisted and painful than any others. It’s the ‘Dream Song’ or ‘Grace’ of the album; it doesn’t sound like those songs but it serves the same purpose they did on Mind and Psalm.

So overall it’s a nice amount of fun. Suitable for many occasions (funerals preferably). The second half of the album wanes a bit but I wouldn’t call it shit or anything. I think if Connelly went for a bit more of a mixed approach, i.e. not shirking longer, more experimental songs (like the ones that made The High Confessions record) and stuck a few of those on (and scratch a few of the expendable songs that are on there) it would have been a classic. But that’s just my own tastes and Connelly did what he said he’d do. Well worth it and good to see he still wants to let rip now and then.

3/5

Just found this shit on Bandcamp! Pulling out the Beyer headies and giving it a spin, so farr holy fking shit!http://chrisconnelly.bandcamp.com/album/artificial-madness

Have you heard the original 1981 version by Visitors?

My Review of the Album:

I’ve listened to the stream once, and I really dig it. Some songs more than others, but it’s quite nice. Now if only Relapse would ship my CD already, jesus…
