Not really, no. Went out with a girl several years ago who was borderline goth. I straightened her out for a while, but then she relapsed [:/]. I always equate goths with great insecurity. Maybe that is the appeal then to young girls.

Goth chicks are great to look at, get high with, and talk music with, until the emotional instability, suicidal tendencies, and Trojan clinginess kicks in… and then you realize most of her music is garbage. Heh, I don’t even blaze anymore, so it’s officially a lost cause.
Yeah I meant that a lot of insecure needy and troubled people are going to gravitate towards that kind of look or whatever. But everyone’s insecure in their own ways too and there are people who just like to dress a certain way as well and are confident.
But also I meant the androgyny of goth and the macabre “dark artist” thing I mean how could you not see the appeal of that to young dumb impressionable girls?
Take any dork in highschool who is skinny and awkward and if you goth him up he will at least have some schtick and will look better that way (if done right) and get laid more than if he staid dorky looking.
I think “goth” culture is definitely here to stay and is worthwhile if you wade through the crap for great artists (most of whom would probably deny the tag and/or involvement in the “scene” lol). Lots of great artists. Lots of miserable cliches too.
But you can’t deny bands like Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle, umm…Ministry etc. etc. are connected irrevocably to “goth” as are a ton of shitty acts.
Up and down kind of like…every subculture.

Back in my day it was mohawks. I would go into the city and occasionally run into guys who had left school at 16 'cos they were bullied and couldn’t handle it. Or they were sick of being picked on and decked some guy and then just up and left. Within the space of a few months they had become punks and were hanging out on the steps of Flinders St station with their mohawks and chains and studded jackets and Exploited t-shirts - often with a Siouxsie Sioux look-a-like attached to their hip. Suddenly these once upon a geeks were ‘tough’ street guys who carried switchblades, did drugs and slept in squats. Or they’d be pot head skaters with crusty dreads and Extreme Noise Terror shirts. Or they were goth loners with long, dyed black hair, army jackets and Sex Gang Children shirts - not to mention multiple facial piercings. Take your pick.
That was all like 20 years ago.
I’d imagine most of those guys are dead now. Or in mental hospitals. Or working in a government paid job.
