Byrne & Eno's "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"

Thought it was about time for another “this album is the coolest ever” thread!

Seriously though this album is such a killer. It was so futuristic and fresh for its time and it remains a timeless classic.

I remember my brother scored it when it came out in 81 as he was a big Talking Heads & Brian Eno fan. Needless to say it absolutely blew us away. I was a youngster at the time and wasn’t obsessed about music at all but the strange sounds on this album always fascinated me.

My fav song on it is still “Moonlight In Glory” after all these years. The bass is awesome and the sampling is very spooky with regards to the Hanzel & Gretyl theme…

The percussion and bass on the whole album is amazing…then you have the wicked sampling which even features an exorcism on the track “Jezebel”.

This album is essential and features a great line-up which includes the legendary Dubbiddy Dubwise Bill Laswell on bass too!

I was just reading about it on wikipedia and found out some interesting things about it I wasn’t aware of…

Does anyone have the reissued 2006 version which features the extas??? I never got around to picking it up and I’ve always wondered about the extras…

Anyway…all hail “My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts”!!!

Yeah I downloaded the bonus version. It is a must if you are into this album. The songs are all remastered and sound 10 x better. Plus there are extra tracks. This is an awesome album with some excellent grooves. Highly recommended and, as you said, well ahead of its time. Classic.

Have you heard the new Brian Eno/David Byrne CD? I registered for their site and got a free track via e-mail. It was alright…I’d have to give it another chance…but the vocals annoyed me. I preferred the instrumental direction of the first album.

Byrne and eno make an amazing combo, especially the heads albums eno produced. All good stuff to me and neither have failed to me even if they both mellowed out some…alot! I do miss the heads though. :sigh: But at least they ended it on a stellar, flawless note though.

the new cd “everything that will happen, will happen today” is pretty cool. I did all of byrne’s stuff really… i’m surprised he’s not covered more often

I think the reason that Byrne/Heads/Eno aren’t covered more often is because the songs reflect ‘style’ more than substance. It’s the same reason that Dylan gets covered so much. He’s not a great performer and really has a simple style…so he’s easy to cover.

It’s difficult for other artists to put their own twist on an Eno song since the original twist is what makes the song in the first place.

It’s not a half bad album.

Agreed - was DEFINITELY ahead of it’s time. I remember being in a record store in '82 where it was being played over the loudspeaker. Sounded like some mutant, post punk Herbie Hancock thing.

Not really my fave Eno album though. It’s nowhere near as good as ‘On Land’ or his mid '70s ‘pop’ stuff which is stellar.

I love the new Byrne/Eno album…really great songs. Obviously I’d be more than happy with a sequel to MLITBOG but I was more than happy with what they served up 2nd time around.

MLITBOG is easily the best album Eno did along with “Here Come The Warm Jets” imo.

Eno is a genius.

Oh, a few years back I submitted my ‘Top 100 Albums Of All Time’ to a friend’s fanzine and guess what my number 1 album of all time was…

…‘Here Come The Warm Jets’!!!

Good call.

That album is ESSENTIAL!!!

“Baby’s On Fire” is one of the most bad-ass songs ever with the all-time most vicious guitar solo ever as far as I’m concerned. Hard to believe that album came out in 71. “Blank Frank” is another beast and “On Some Far Away Beach” still brings a tear to my eye to this day. Awesome awesome album.

“Before & After Science” is another gem.

an interesting note, “Baby’s On Fire” has Ogre’s favorite guitar solo in it.

love Eno, especially his glam stuff, but ambient 4 and Thursday Afternoon are also some of my favorites.

I just got a new book on him the other day, really good stuff. This guy did some REALLY cool stuff while he was in college.

Respect!

The solo is by Robert Fripp and it’s fucking insane. The whole song is waaaaaaaaay ahead of it’s time and still sounds fresh today imo.

I’m a big fan of “Bush of Ghosts” and I’m also a big fan of the new Byrne/Eno. It’s the best Byrne stuff I’ve heard since the mid-80s.

“Here Come The Warm Jets” would definitely be in a top 10 list of albums for me too. I remember stealing my brother’s cassette dub of that and “Tiger Mountain” back when I was 12 and listening to it until the tape warped. Few albums have had the influence on me that that album has had.

There are a few mediocre Eno albums but by and large his body of work is monumental. He’s also responsible for Michael Nyman starting composition so I have him to thank for another chunk of great music.

Hurray for Eno!

It came out in '74.

And yes, it is essential listening.

Wasn’t it the guitar player from Roxy Music who performs that ‘vicious’ guitar solo??

I could have sworn it said 71 on my vinyl??? Anyway after doing some investigations the album was released in 73.[cool]

There were members of Hawkwind, Roxy Music and a few others along with Fripp. I’m pretty sure it’s Fripp that does the guitar solo in it? I could be wrong though although from hearing Hawkwind’s stuff I doubt it.

Another great Eno album is ‘The Pearl’ with Harold Budd. Really really beautiful.

Eno/John Cale/Nico - three of my all time favourite artists.

Back when I was known to worship at the altar of John Barleycorn…“The Pearl” was my favorite hangover album. It was so sophisticated and soothing, it would actually cure my hangover.

You must then be familiar with the "June 1, 1974"album if you like Eno/Cale/Nico. The album also features a personal fave, Kevin Ayers.

@ Olsen…Manzanera plays the “Baby’s On Fire” lead on the 801 Live album…but the studio version features Fripp.

So now he’s actually curing hangovers?

Aaaaaah Eno - is there anything you can’t do?

Yeah, I need to check that out.

surprised no one has mentioned the Fripp/Eno collab albums. Evening Star for the win.

Music On Land is possibly the first “dark” ambient album.
