They’ll prattle on about the merits of their music and it’s authenticity and whatever, and I’ve given up arguing. Because the whole time, I’m thinking that whatever the fuck it is they care about so much really does pale in comparison to the music I studied.
Don’t get me wrong; Varg and Co. definitely have their merits and do great things within their chosen medium.
That’s why I will always dig it.
But, they could never pull off anything any of the composers from Paganini right up to Glass have done if they tried. Not forgetting virtually all of these composers had at least a rudimentary knowledge of every instrument they composed for, outside of their main one, or two.
I know I’m sounding like an arrogant schmuck and that’s pretty much why I don’t argue any more. It pretty much puts me in the same wanker basket as the people who’ll argue this shit with me.
But fuck it, I’m saying it because I think it really puts it in perspective.
These guys are just a bunch of cunts that picked up a guitar and made some decent music. They haven’t changed the world, apart from making a few heads nod from time to time. Thus, I don’t see why anyone would get worked up in favour or opposition to it. Either dig it, or don’t, without feeling like some authority over anyone else who thinks otherwise.
