Black Metal snobs always try to say Cradle Of Filth isn’t Black Metal because they sell millions of records and get hot chicks at their gigs? Get a grip and come to terms with the fact that a Black Metal act can be as popular as Nirvana and have chick fans that look like the hot chicks from Glee wearing leather and spikes.
My argument is more based off of COF’s style and lees off of popularity. It sounds nothing like real BM. Mayhem, classic Darkthrone, early Sarcofago, Emperor, early Bathory, Hellhammer now that’s fuckin BM right there. Now COF may have been inspired by but they are in now way shape or form BM. I’m not saying BM should be totally underground, true and kvlt. It has to get heard somehow but it shouldn’t be as big as COF. Even Dimmu Borgir has a little more room to be considered BM than COF. Done arguing. Point proven. And in mine and some other’s opinions I’m right. Thank you very much

No way, shape, or form, eh? That’s silly. You and so many other wannabe black metal fans seem so conflicted. You spend all your time crying about how people don’t accept black metal and then when the best band of the genre actually makes a success of themselves you cry about how they are not black metal and black metal can’t be popular.
Either accept that people think the genre sucks and is made up of many ridiculous kooks or celebrate when one of the pack actually sells more than 5 copies of an album and breaks through to get some bigger exposure.
If it wasn’t for Dani Filth and his band I bet most of the so-called blackmetal fans would have never heard of any of the other bands either.

Oh Gunnar I don’t think you read my message good enough. Not to mention ur putting words in my mouth. I’d like to know why you(and Akbar for that matter) think COF is BM? They sound nothing like the bands that set the bar for the style yet you probably think that just bc they wear black, leather, makeup, spikes and play fast music. I’m sorry but that doesn’t make you BM. BM has a certain atmosphere and COF doesn’t embody any of that whatsoever. But in the same respect it’s easy to mix up COF as a BM band for not only the reasons I listed above but they also happen to be a gateway band like you mentioned. Why do I agree? Bc there was a time when I liked COF. There, I admit it! Granted it was their material in the 90’s. Once I heard Midian and saw a live dvd I pretty much stopped caring. My COF phase came and went in a matter of 7 or 8 months. Ppl told me about other bands so I checked out real BM and there we go. Done with that part of the discussion

I hope you’re kidding and this is all a wind up…otherwise my opinion of you just decreased dramatically overnight.
People take potshots at Varg because he’s such an easy target. Yeah, perhaps he is completely batshit bonkers, but there’s no denying the guy has talent to burn when it comes to music. And it’s not a stereotypical talent either. It’s something unique and completely self taught and completely unlike anyone else.
Remember, most of the black metallers you laugh at are copying HIM, not he other way around. It’s no wonder he distances himself from their adulation. Laugh at his music all you want. Call him a nutter and a racist too. You can’t deny his influence and his legacy and his willpower. Remember, he accomplished all that he has without a big, fat recording contract and a team of assistants and producers. More than most of your ‘idols’ have ever or will ever do.
And his music shits over the majority of bands a lot of you guys bring to our attention here.

They’re a gothic Iron Maiden covers act. And a bad one at that. They look like a bunch of sissy frat boys at a Halloween dress up party - complete with frilly collars, leather pants and Dracula fangs.
You guys should check out Akitsa or Forgotten Woods for some raw and inspired black metal.

This is true. Almost all blackmetal bands try to copy HIM. The ones that do it well, however, (like Cradle of Filth) might actually have a chance of making something of themselves.
