Brothers Quay Thread

Speeking of geeky film shit, anybody else here a fan of these guys?

Just caught “Piano Tuner of Earthquakes”, thought it was decent but not great. I think I prefer their stop-motion animation to their live action films. I love the puppets, something about pupets and dolls creates a total visceral reaction for me… I’ve heard others echoe this sentiment.

For those of you not hip to the Quays, check this out sometime, just be sure to watch it in the dark to get the full effect:

p.s. - Tool and the people who directed their videos should really be paying these guys some royalties for copping their style!

They do good work.

The Brothers Quay are pretty cool, but I much prefer Jan Svankmajer. Alice is definitely one of the best stop motion films ever made.

The Brother’s Quay have some of the most stunning stop motion in their work I’ve seen. Street of Crocodiles in particular moves like nothing else. Haven’t see the new film yet but hope too. Still, Im more of a Svankmajer fan as well. Alice is brilliant and I really liked Little Otik. It was the perfect blend between Svankmajer’s slowly paced surrealism within the confines of an almost traditional horror film. Great stuff.

god dammit.
I tried to geek out about movies and no one fucking came with me!
AWGH.

YES i LOVE the Quay brothers dammit!
I own the Zeitgeist released DVD of all their films.

You should see The Fall.
Shit you not. Amazing stuff.

See, you’ve got to mention something far more obscure and pretentious than the new movie from the Losing My Religion guy if you want us to geek out with you. You have to talk about a movie where I can try to one-up you by referencing a cult favorite Czech director, and then claiming that he’s “way better” than whatever you initially brought up. Oh, man… I’m a total douche nozzle. Seriously though, The Fall looks pretty neat visually (and sometimes that’s more than enough for me), but I thought his last movie was a total turd.
And yeah, Little Otik is also really awesome. But I thought Svankmajer’s Faust was really, really annoying. I wanted to claw out my eyes when he kept summoning and expelling the devil. Ugh.

Faust is a great movie to have playing in the background at a party. I’ve never tried to watch it on it’s own but seen in bits and pieces here and there between conversations, it’s awesome! It’s also good as a backdrop for live music.

You know what I like to have on in the background at parties? Turkish rip-off movies. Has anyone else seen any of these? Star Wars (aka: The Man Who Saved the World) is probably the most widely seen, but for sheer balls-out craziness, I think nothing compares to The Wizard of Oz. I mean, wouldn’t the Judy Garland version have been better if Dorothy was attacked by cavemen after she visits the Wizard and then the movie ends abruptly? I certainly think so.

I’ve enjoyed bits of Turkish Star Wars in the background at a party before actually! Haven’t seen Wizard of Oz, sounds wonderful though!

booooooo.

I liked The Cell. and even the Losing My Religion video is artistically amazing. I mean the guy was like what? 21? and it was his COLLEGE video project!!? That’s impressive…

So what, I gotta start dropping anmes like Jiri Barta? Or the 1989 version of ALICE?

I certainly don’t have to talk about Bergman do i? That loser? Bahhh… You people and your poo.

The cell was rad. Only half decent thing to come from J-Liz-Oh.

Have you seen Session 9? I’d say that’s a fantastic recent cult classic.

I just bought Tales From The Gimili Hospital.

So ya… Anyway.
Don’t get me wrong I love all those “vintage” foreign directors but ya. I’m more into the Quays & Lynchs & the Aronophskys & Boyles and the Chris Nolans & Finchers & hey!

If this TARSEM dude wants to throw his hat into the artzy movie ring. I’m down. He’s young and that’s what is important. Progression… without it… god dammit I’d be bored.

The Cell??? Damn, Merrick… you seem like a nice guy but The Cell fucking blows dude. Yennifer Lopez isn’t the worst actor in the world, but she was totally unbelievable as a psychiatrist or whatever doctor she was supposed to be. Vince Vaughn was completely laughable, that dude should stick to his wise-ass comedy routine and stay away from serious roles. The absolute lamest part of the movie was how they had Vincent D’Onofrio’s character sing that song that goes:

“Mairzy Doats And Dozy Doats and liddle lamzy divey A kiddley divey too, wouldn’t you?” That was the same damn song that Leland Palmer was singing when he was posessed by the evil spirit BOB in Twin Peaks!!!
What a fucking ripoff!!!

The Visuals in The Cell were cool, but thats it, and they don’t carry the movie. It would have been much better as a short film just with the twisted scenes…

And trust me, I’m not a total film snob by any means…

Okay, you’ve convinced me to check out The Fall. I agree that Session 9 is pretty awesome. I think people run hot & cold with it, but I really thought it was one of the most effective horror movies to come out in the last several years.
And no, you don’t really have to namecheck cool and pretentious directors all the time. I was really just making fun of myself.
