Broadrick reviews Ministry in Terrorizer.........

Justin originally thought Scarecrow was something offa Pailhead.

Yikes.

Godflesh opened for Ministry in summer 96 during the Sphinctour for some dates in Europe.

And in Terrorizer, about Scarecrow Justin said that it sounded “dated”, what surprised me a bit…

Pailhead? Well… at least he was reasonably close. But dated? Who the hell is JKB to talk about dated? I mean, don’t get me wrong. JKFlesh is my second biggest idol/hero in music but he has NO room to talk about sounding dated.

Peace!

I agree. A lot of Godflesh stuff sounded almost instantly dated and has aged the worst out of a lot of my fav. bands.

Hell, most of the Godlfesh material sounds about as primitive and outdated as Big Black’s stuff…A simple drum machine beat and some angry guitars with evil vocals…

(That’s not to say I don’t worship both bands btw)

Is that not on purpose? That’s Godflesh trademark, no?

On the other hand, during the blind test Justin recognised immediately a Wolf Eyes song (from the ‘Burned Mind’ album if I remember)…

Godflesh pretty much created their own niche, but it gets very old after a while. People complain about HOTM being a retreat, Broaderick hasn’t deviated very far from the original formula in the past 17 years.

At least Jus digs Hevy Devy from SYL…

in the latest metal hammer, there’s an interview/review thingy of jesu’s album. justin goes on about how when he first met al (in about 91 i think at that gig), and al was wearing a godflesh tshirt and justin was well chuffed [:P]

and incidentally, there was a funny story in the last issue where mortiis was at the NAMM show, and al puked all over him after drinking too much red wine

man, i thought i had quite a few failed relationships, but poor justin man…all his lyrics are about dysfunctional relationships…heh

Wasn’t mentionned yet, in Terrorizer they reviewed the Jesu album and it got 9/10 as rating.

If Justin didn’t recognize Ministry at first during the blind test, he still recognized immediatly Killing Joke, Suicide, Laibach, Zeni Geva and Wolf Eyes, as I said before…

Which Killing Joke track was it? What did he say about them - did he mention that they too sound dated??

Failed relationships!?! One of his girlfriends committed suicide apparently - or so the story goes. And his father once threatened to kill his whole family as well, so he was then raised by his grandmother who was a witch. Poor guy.

Still, could have been worse. Could’ve been raised by a democrat - yikes!

Justin was always fan of Killing Joke. His pre-Godflesh band was called based on a KJ song, Fall Of Because.

Godflesh used to play live the KJ song ‘Requiem’. And during their last UK tour, in London, Jaz Coleman came on stage to sing on that song…

So, I guess he wouldn’t have something negative to say concerning KJ.

What is it saying then? You seem to be saying BB suffers for it’s lo fi 80s production

But isn’t that the whole point of big black? Super sweaty analogue tinnyness. It never sounded bang up to date & actively tried not to

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

It’s lo fi, easy to confuse 80s lo fi for sounding outdated. Godflesh is basically guitar and a drum machine, that’s not really a formula for sounding outdated.

For example Streetcleaner and LORAH came out around the same time, but LORAH has more electronics that make it sound dated.

This, on the other hand, relies on those elements, but I don’t think would ever get confused for anything but a late-70s jam (a video is on that page, natch):

Which isn’t to say it’s a BAD jam [cool]

Its great that you’ve changed so much in the 10 years that have passed. [:|]

[laugh]

all roads lead back to KILLING JOKE, my friends, truth.

It can’t be denied…Jaz INVENTED music!

If ‘Uncle Al’ wanted to really take a page from the KJ book, though, at some point he needs to move to Iceland to avoid the apocalypse…
