Recently got my hands on the 2007 remaster, and what a difference it makes! The original was far from being a bad album, although the production seemed to sacrifice too much of the band’s power in favor of catering to a mainstream sound.
For those not in the know, the re-release is based on the original Chris Kimsey (who worked with them on Night Time) mixes, instead of the mixes by another producer that ended up being released in 1986. The new version uncovers the guitars from layers of synth, livens up the bass and removes the insanely high pitch that Jaz’s vocals had on the original.
I bought it two months ago, and while the new mixes are interesting, I think I’m just too used to the original EG release to prefer this one. I’m also a big fan of the Night Time/Brighter era, so I’m partial to the ‘wet’ mix on the original release. I do like the drum intro to Adorations, and noticed that Love of The Masses has an extra verse. The packaging is very nice, and the commentary by Paul’s brother in the insert is a good read. I think it’s good to keep a copy of both versions of this album.
I remember seeing the band play the Reading Festival in '86 where a number of the ‘Brighter’ songs were played.
They certainly had an intensity about them that was a little lost on the album, but Killing joke gigs have a tendency to be intense affairs, so no real surprise there.
Still haven’t got a hold of my copy, but will do soon.
I do seem to remember an excellent remix of Adorations, I think on a 12"; I hope this is the one on the reissue.

I really thought this one was an excellent update. I’ve been extremely happy with all the remastered reissues of the EMI years material. Much to my surprise.
i just got the remasterd brighter than a thousand suns i didnt like it at first its way too soft 4 a Killing Joke album but i gave it a chance now i cant stop listining to it. i love Sanity and Wintergardens i dont like the remixes theyre pretty gay now im gonna get the remastered Fire Dances!
I bought the remastered Brighter Than A Thousand Suns and was more impressed with that than the Night Time re-issue, where I didn’t hear much difference at all (or is it just me)? The remixes aren’t really golden either.
