Lisa Gerrard usually gets all the kudos for Dead Can Dance and her solo projects/soundtracks/etc.
But I always actually preferred Brendan Perry’s tracks. The man has an incredible voice, writes great lyrics, composes sparse yet genius songs. His new album, “Ark”, is really good. Anyone heard it? If not, HIGHLY recommended.
I’d slightly disagree in that I find Gerrard’s solo material (that I’m familiar with) better than Perry’s solo stuff. I listened to some his new Ark album and was not that impressed. I laughed at the film he made for it when he was talking about how he spent the last year or something in isolation, but chatting with friends… on the internet.
He is very talented but I think he suits DCD more than working on his own. His tracks on DCD are amazing, that I do agree with. I think his voice is good but Gerrard is an epic vocalist, maybe the best I’ve ever heard, man or woman.
It was not really my intention to claim that Perry is the better vocalist/writer whatever. Its just that I think he lives very much in the shadow of his far more gifted DCD partner. All I meant to say was that Perry is quite an interesting and worthwhile musician himself. I think maybe his pretentious tendencies might also be caused by him playing second fiddle for all these years…
