according to wikipedia they are a drone doom kinda thing with influences like: Sleep, Nick Cave, Nick Drake, Venom, and the Melvins.
Seems interesting… I was hoping some on here would have actually heard them…
I saw them live in Chicago a couple of years ago. I like 'em and they are good live. People clump them into the stoner rock category as they do with Jesu, etc:

I’m impressed that Trent seems to know of the many decent acts out there (and there are tons out there). He grabs them from all genres which is what is impressive.
Boris are at turns - 70’s style Stoner rock (see: Pink & Heavy Rocks), Drone (see: Absolutego), Noise (see: any of their 5 collabs w/ Merzbow) and something else (their soundtrack work, Rainbow & Smile) - which falls outside any neatly painted lines. like the Melvins, you never know what you’re buying to you put it on the player.
Sounds promising… Should make an interesting opener. Will also be funny to see how the croud reacts to them.
I still remember watching PWEI and Jim Rose open for NIN. Now THAT was a great show.
I saw the Manson/Rose/NIN lineup.
It was great because the Manson band was young and hungry, and few bands were doing the nouveau-Alice Cooper thing at the time.
As someone said already, a good analogy is the Japanese Melvins. Boris is truly one of the most interesting ‘metal’ bands out there atm.
Boris rule if you’re into the genre. I had only heard bits and pieces but was in my local store looking for any doom/stoner/sludge stuff they might have with not much luck. I looked for some boris and was surprised to find one copy of smile. Picked it up and love it. Some are fast rockers while some are slow with a melody. The last 2 songs are basically one long one and is amazing.
Actually I had listened to their collaboration with Sunn O))) for a year, so I was kind of familiar.
I’ve had pink and heavy rocks downloaded forever but haven’t listened. I need to get amplifier worship as I just love the title of the album. Perfect name for a heavy drone album.
So yeah, check them out with an open mind and repeated listens. If you don’t like them just stare at how beautiful Wata is while she’s playing. Wish I would’ve got to see them in Austin.
Edit: I should probably mention, if you plan to download smile there are 2 mixed versions, the japanese version and the american. I highly recommend the american as apparently the japanese one is quite a bit different and has more “techno like beats” instead and the songs are completely different.
I just shelled out $60 for the Boris/Merzbow ‘Rock Dream’ triple vinyl magnum opus t’other week. And it’s an out and out classic in the purest sense. Definitely worth checking out.
The split album that Boris did with Sunn O))) is magnificentn as well. Will prbably shell out another $60 or so for the vinyl version in the coming weeks. Will also pick up the ‘Smile’ double vinyl too most likely.

Sunbaked Snow Cave (w/ Merzbow)
Akuma No Uta (Freak out rock-ish), Absolutego (deep, terrifying drone) and Feedbacker (glowing guitar noise soundscapes) are my favourites. I have bought some of their stuff purely for the packaging, they are a band with an awesome ethic about their album art (Mabuta No Uta (sp?) and the Japanese version of Akuma… are particularly noteworthy. I havent heard their latest stuff. That stuff about the two different mixes are bizarre. Lots of people are angry about forking out for the ‘inferior’ Japanese version’s mix. I would totally to see them live. I don’t think they have ever been to Aus.
I have ‘sun baked snow cave’ with merzbow too but i dont really listen to it because nothing happens.

Japan is got some kick ass folk at the momment such as Goth Trad, Melt Banana and Boris.
If Trent got Goth Trad to opem NIN would be blown out of the stadium.
I heard you can hear the latest Merzbow song by turning your tv to any non op channel (you know with the fuzz) and rocking out to the static noise… Any truth to that?

I’ve never heard them. I’ve heard of them but never heard their music. There’s a Merzbow box at Amoeba in Hollywood for like 600 Bucks! funny that a band I’ve never heard has a legacy!!

The Merzbox is an awesome thing. 50 cds, 20 of which were unreleased/new plus a bunch of stuff (t-shirt, charm, etc) it was supposed to be limited tho, and is going for mad prices now.
As for Merzbow you have to listen and decide. If you like stuff from Ministry such as: Corrosion or Fucked, you might enjoy some Merzbow.
You’ll either love it or loathe it - often at once.
