Oh, god the “… father” part gave me an ulcer. I don’t understand the point in that little “twist” either. It changed nothing and didn’t give you a moment of, “Oh, so that’s why [whatever happened]!” or anything. It was just sloppily thrown in there for no good reason.
There’s so much that makes absolutely no sense in that movie. It’s fucking amazing visually and beautiful but the plot and rational for the character actions is mind-boggling. Like: Let’s be friendly and try to pet the fucking alien-snake-thing. You wouldn’t try to pet a snake you just found in the wild on earth so why the fuck would you do it on another planet!?! There’s so much more… so much more…
Shame because that movie had a lot of potential. I can still enjoy it for the visuals and if I pretend that everyone on the ship is mentally retarded and they’re being sent to a hostile alien planet because in the future the people of earth dispose of the handicapped that way.
Yeah, it really does look beautiful, one of the loveliest-looking films for a long time. The trailer totally sucked me in, i expected a new sci-fi classic, but then when the bad reviews came out like an avalanche of warm shit, i tempered my expectations hugely.
That “father” thing, it was ludicrous, like you say it added absolutely nothing at all, there was zero effect from that “shocker” except a lot of groaning from me and my friends i watched it with. The snake-petting moment… these guys are scientists, they should be aware of the dangers. I had heard that the deleted scenes explained that bit, but they explain nothing. I watched them, some of them were pretty cool and added little bits of interest, but overall they were pretty pointless.
There was no development of any of the characters, and the ones i liked, the captain, Idris Elba, and his crew, were barely in it. The characters behaved like idiots. The guy who had the holo-map and tracker thing, how the fuck did he get lost inside the monument? It’s just not well thought out at all.
There’s so many wasted opportunities in it. The ideas (well, speculation, really, after seeing the trailer) my friends and i had were actually better than what was in the film. The original script by Jon Spaihts sounds much much better than what ended up in the film. Damon Lindelof, why do they insist on hiring that useless turd? He ruins everything, he’s nothing but a hack. I wonder if they’ll get him in to piss all over this Blade Runner sequel script, if it ever comes to fruition?
There was something i read ages ago that mentioned the Engineers being interested in the humans, and trying to make them breed, but being ignorant of exactly how our species worked, there was forced male rape in the script. They forced males to try to reproduce! Crazy! You can’t have that in a Hollywood film though, so get Damon Lindelof in to tame it down for mass consumption.
I do think there were a lot of interesting thoughts and imagery in the film, most of which were not followed up on, but they should have stayed bold and done what they’d originally wanted, instead of putting out a compromised film like they did.
