Blade Runner

Picked these up…awesome

And I’m playing the PC game from 1997.

easily one of my all-time favorite films. the original blu-ray box is like 20 bucks and has all five edits, so if anyone wants to save some pennies, and is ok not getting the book, that is something to keep your eyes out for!

i actually gave a lecture in a ‘scientific ethics’ class at Evergreen about this movie, and the idea of humanity being achieved as compared to bestowed. or at least, given by man, not just by ‘god’/celestial design.

so, since you are a fan, i will ask the ultimate fan question,

Deckard, replicant or not?

Deckard, replicant or not?

Yeah…always a debate.

I’m gonna say no since he gave the apathy test to Sean Young.

really?

i am conflicted on it, and i can never really say yes or no, if i think he is a biological human.
i do think, and this was easy for me to accept, that he is (regardless of construction) a human. he shows an ability to ‘empathetically’ help, and protect.
in those final moments with Batty, i feel like it is becoming clear that Roy’s attempts to find humanity were hamfisted, and in his death he finally realizes this, whereas through emotional connection, and sheer ignorance to his own mechanized beginnings, Deckard is more human than the few biological humans we meet throughout the film.

I’ve loved it since i was a kid, have seen it so many times, got the dvd tin that came out with all the versions, got the Final Cut blu-ray - after watching The Final Cut i’ve gone off it, i don’t know why. Maybe i was in a bad mood or something, but that version really annoyed me. It seemed somehow boring and kinda off. It seemed like he really dwells on wounds in a way that wasn’t there before. I dunno, he needs to stop tinkering with it and just leave it alone, this was a version too far for me.

Oh, i just looked for something that mentions the differences, i didn’t imagine the extra gruesome stuff, thank God, thought i was going mad.

I think he is a replicant as well, or at least i did. Scott says he definitely is, but in the Final Cut i realised for the first time what an absolute arsehole Deckard is, so now i think he’s human. No skin job could be such a tactless, unfeeling wanker.

Harrison Ford has never at any time in his life been anything even remotely resembling a human. He’s more like a mummy with a mechanized robotic frame, or a Frankenstein zombie or something. Whatever he is, he sucks and I hate him. Screw that guy!

Great fucking movie. That scene in the rain. You know the one. Goddamn… well done.

The nighttime one that’s kind of dark? Is that the one you mean?

Kinda related but there was a really well done fan vid of Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage” with that clip (amongst others) used in it and it fit so well.

yeah, the final cut was unneeded.

and thats my problem with Scott, its like the 3 movies he has made that i have ANY interest in seem to have come together by accident. (amazing writers, brilliant casts, some shots that are actually known as accidental/inspired by the actors) and then he just HARPS on them for so long, trying his damnedest to outdo them and to ‘give the best version’ that he kinda… misses the point. Prometheus was UNWATCHABLE. and now he is planning a Blade Runner Sequel that will tie both Prometheus and Blade Runner together…

he reminds me of Sam Rami and Tobe Hooper in that respect. my favorite works by all three of them seem to be my favorites because they are the films that each of them feels is most in need of fucking with…

Prometheus was UNWATCHABLE.

Prometheus wasn’t unwatchable, but it was certainly sloppy and a missed opportunity. Also it stars Charlize Theron who fucking RUINS everything she stars in.

RUINS!

He is?!?!

I’m a bit iffy on Blade Runner. Never really bought into the hype. For the most part it’s drab and dull and doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Also the ending is the most anti climactic ending in cinematic history.

Yeah, i definitely think a direct Blade Runner sequel with Deckard is a terrible idea, and it would disprove his theory that Deckard’s a replicant, because with the age Ford is now, surely his lifespan would have ended? He’ll probably have some stupid get-out for that too, “errr, they found a way in the intervening period to extend the lives of useful replicants”.

I think he’s a very talented man, Ridley Scott, but he’s a bullshitter and is busy trying to rake over past glories and make some coin. These sequels, “they’re either a benefit or a hazard. If they’re a benefit, it’s not my problem”. Sadly, i think they fall more into the hazard category, as did The Final Cut. I defended Blade Runner for years to people i know who didn’t like it, but Ridley Scott (or Diddley Squat as we call him in my house) pretty much destroyed my love for it by releasing that hundredth version. 2 was enough.

I liked Prometheus well enough, i had low expectations and like Fassbender, but i’ve agreed with pretty much every criticism i’ve ever heard of it. I spent a lot of the film rolling my eyes and exhaling loudly in frustration. The few good bits were great, the rest was frustratingly, laughably rubbish.

Man, i hate her too, i don’t know why, but ever since i saw her in that 2 Days in the valley film, which i think might have been her first, i’ve just hated her. That line in Prometheus where she’s talking to Weyland, and ends it with “…father”, terrible, i just burst out laughing at a) her delivery and b) it was a totally useless development. There was so much underdeveloped good stuff and other…just… shite "twists in Prometheus, as well as laugh out loud unintentional comedy, that it almost ruined the film.

And as for it being LV 223 and not LV246 - why?! So they can squeeze another film out of it. It set it up to seem like that might be the planet, but - aha - no, it’s not, and we need yet more nonsense to get to that point where another engineer ship crashes on a planet, spilling it’s alien load carelessly. I’ll watch the sequel to Prometheus, but will expect even less. I know Blade Runner’s sequel is planned but i doubt it’ll happen, thank fuck.

Definitely in my top ten. Love everything about it-the story, the message, the visuals and the music.

I believe Deckard is a replicant.

Love this movie. The Final Cut confirms that Deckard is a Replicant. Each Replicant is given a “reveal” in the form of an eye glow that occurs. (Much like redeye in a photo) Deckard’s is when he looks at Rachel in the mirror.

She’s fucking plastic. When it comes to serious drama she just gets it all wrong. I can imagine her playing a wealthy bitch in a chick flick but…that’s about it.

Yes, we ended up with a film that stood for very little. Just a mish mash of half baked ideas and really, really stupid and annoying characters who for the most part acted like dumbass surburbanites on a reality tv show instead of the “professionals” they were supposed to portray.

It could have been so much and ended up being so little. Nothing was achieved, nothing was resolved, nothing seemed to have a point. And to boot, there were a bunch of totally miscast actors with neither the presence nor the gravitas needed to pull it off.

In the end it amounted to little more than an episode of Lost In Space directed by David Fincher.

Also a favorite movie of mine. When I first saw this film it absolutely blew me away, also that scene, one of the most epic scenes of ALL TIME. I believe The Revolting Cocks song Attack The Ships On Fire snagged the name from this movie.

AND WTF? Deckard is a replicant?

And about the Blade Runner sequel, thought I heard it was going to be a reboot or remake, not a sequel. I could be wrong.

Yes.

Yes.

It is a sequel, but won’t necessarily involve any characters from the first one.

According to Ridley Scott, he was. I think that’s a ridiculous idea. The films writer agrees with me - he never intended Deckard to be a replicant.
