I was updating the videos on the Wax Trax page (http://www.waxtrax-not-subpop.org/videos.html) with links and noticed that someone uploaded the Blackouts’ video for Idiot to Youtube. Not sure why it’s taken so long for a copy to come out, but you can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrUZMle8sJc. Maybe a little more of the guys than you want to see, but still pretty cool.
yeah…that was cool.
Sweet - was that even on one of the old WaxTrax Black Box VHS tapes?
No, it wasn’t even on the original VHS Video Samplers they put out!
[:)] Thanks!
Did Wax Trax ever release any of the Blackouts material on CD?
Starting to find some of their other songs on youtube. Fucking awesome
That was pretty cool, I didn’t know the guys had ever made a video. Why this one was not on the Wax Trax Video Sampler I don’t know as it predates the similar Envoye video by The Young Gods by several years.
Been awhile since I listened to Idiot, and I can definitely hear some Man Should Surrender in there.
Its practically the same bassline haha. I also hear a little bit where the What About Us bassline came from
emusic used to have (and probably still does) History In Reverse, which is a compilation of Blackouts material. Its pretty good and probably the easiest legal way of obtaining their stuff.
Nice, very nice.
Here’s an insightful review from amazon for History in Reverse:
If you like potatoes than this album is for you. Depeche Mode. Big Black. Joy Division. Spazz attack, good stuff. Time to bump into the big can of worms. Sorry for this utterly bad review. This album is awesome filled with energy. sometimes makes me feel like puking on a smurf
I think its safe to say that this is my fav band of the moment. Idiot is very much stuck in my head. Happy Hunting Ground is another kick ass song by them. You can actually find History In Reverse on myspace
I play my copy of History in Reverse to death every month or so. Just can’t get ENOUGH of that riddim sexshun.
Thanks for the linkage, Bisquitodoom. That video is… unique, to say the least.
[laugh]
I noticed that the version in the video isn’t the same as the album version. Listen to both and you’ll see what I mean
Glad so many people are into these guys. One of my favorites as well, but big surprise withe a Barker/Rieflin/Barker combo. Erich’s a very cool vocalist as well. Wish he hadn’t dropped off the map like he did.

It’s actually the second version on the comp. They added it as the last track. Nice, but I would have rather had the full version of The Everglades instead.
Erich went on to play bass in a band called The Toiling Midgets after the blackouts split up in the mid 80’s. Ironically, the blackouts last tour was opening for Ministry on the twelve inch singles tour. Toiling Midgets are still around as they’ve been on and off since their formation in '79.
And I did see that Everglades originally was like 12 minutes long. I cant imagint that song being any longer than it already is though
Check it.
I did some snooping on Discogs for that twelve-fuckin’-minute “Everglades” (made me [shocked] IRL), and I found THIS.

Check out who’s credited with the song “The Politics of Ecstasy.”
The brothers Barker, that’s who.
Can someone, ANYONE, hook us up with a rip of that?

Not sure if the main male voice is Paul (Ion), or James Husted. Roland Barker also seems to have a couple of cassette releases, Vortexes with Bill Reiflin, and The Eternal optimist with Paul.
Yeah, that song’s really not that spectacular. Roland had a couple solo cassette releases as well as one with James Husted under the name “Sequencer People” and several under the name “Young Scientist”. There can’t be more than 10-20 copies of each, as I don’t think they ever came out, or if they did, they never saw a broard release and were only on cassette. My copy of the Seattle Syndrome comp came with a promo flyer for all the label’s upcoming releases and listed The Eternal Optimist. I searched forever and finally emailed Roland about it. He said don’t bother trying, as it nver came out. A few years later I found a guy who bought all of Engram’s backstock and he had a few copies of each. It’s really minimal synth stuff. Paul does make an appearance on one song, but that’s about it for him.
