BLACKEST OF THE BLACK - Ministry and Danzig

Gunnar, Acid_Cripple, y’all were there…Did they really play “Bad Blood?” And how was the new song?

Oh, man fuckin’ jealous as shit for bad blood. Encore was predictable but that is a pretty decent set list. [strike]How does Antifa sound?[/strike] intro sounds heavy and slow

Ministry were great! And yeah, they opened with BAD BLOOD!!!

The new song was not even memorable to me. Not bad or anything, but just kind of blended in with everything and sounded like Ministry so I wasn’t really even noticing or thinking about it.

We saw Sin and got to catch up for a bit before the show which was nice.

The band sounded great and seemed to have a good chemistry on stage. New bass player and drummer sounded great. Jason (bass) is kind of a glory hog and keeps standing front and center . . . part of me thought it was really fucking douche for him to do that shit, but, in truth, he’s tall and menacing looking and when up there towering over everyone and silhouetted by the lights . . . . it looks fucking rad. Al seemed in a great mood and was not wasted, so that was good.

The whole thing was a fucking blast, but just as fun was getting to see a bunch of really cool cats before and after the show. We had a pretty righteous crew.

Antifa sounds like that Black Sabbath song.

There wasn’t a single thing in that song that wasn’t completely predictable. It’s like someone fed Hero and Just One Fix into a machine and programmed it to write more songs like that. But at least it’s not embarrassingly bad like that Relapse album. I don’t think it’s great, but I wouldn’t be ashamed to be caught listening to it, I guess. That’s a step up, of sorts.

And there’s at least a couple spots on the chorus where he doesn’t even try lipsynching along.

How was Danzig? Other fest details? I really wanted to fly out for that thing but ultimately it just wasn’t in the cards because of work scheduling issues…

Overall, this was a pretty fun event. But frankly, that was in spite of the festival itself.

Met up with Gunnar and some other friends and that was a blast. The event itself was, as expected, pretty cheesetastic. Fake corpses and plastic body parts hung from every tree. “Castle” Danzig was a hilarious joke. And the VIP badge we all sprung for was pretty much a rip off. Beer was $2 cheaper in the area, but still insanely overpriced. ($8 for a can of Modelo!) But at least our port-o-potty lines were way shorter.

They had some cool vendors though. I scored a badass Gummo shirt.

We got there a little later in the afternoon, so we missed a bunch of the openers. But I can tell you: the band Atreyu sucks. I hate the name alone, but then they played a nu metal version of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name” and it’s pretty much the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Yuck.

Ministry kicked ass. As poor as the recent output has been, they rarely disappoint live. They opened with “Psalm 69” and have added “Bad Blood” to the set. They played a new song, which I thought sounded pretty good. I talked to Sin before the show, and he said they’ve been rehearsing “Filthpig” for the Euro tour, but weren’t playing it that night as it was a shortened set.

I love the Misfits, but never cared for most of Danzig’s other stuff. So I’ve never seen him live. He didn’t sound so hot that night. He was out of breath by the 2nd song and never recovered. He also was doing to the crowd singalong thing to compensate.

Anyway, it was still a lot of fun. The people watching was spectacular.

Although attendance seemed to be low so who knows if we’ll get one again though.

You missed out, grmps!

I left a pile of about $20 of bills and change on my kitchen counter along with a note that said, “Sorry.”
I sure wasn’t going to clean up.

And yeah, Danzig was fun, but not spectacular. I was getting radical in the pit so sonic excellence wasn’t super important to me anyway.

I liked the shitty cheesiness of the fest. It was way undersold, so aside from the GA restrooms (which we didn’t have to use since we sprung for the joke which is VIP) there weren’t lines for anything else. If you wanted beer or a taco or something you just walked right up, or maybe waited for 2-3 people tops.

They had a freak stage with silly bondage stuff going on. I only saw Dave Navarro flying around on meathooks pierced in his back. I was yelling at him thinking it was just some turd that looked like him. But, no, turns out it was him.

The real shit for me was just partying with everyone.
We got radical at Candlewood before and after the gig and it was a fucking blast.

The people watching was spectacular.

Man, I can only imagine [:)]

You missed out, grmps!

Yeah, sounds like it.That sucks I missed out but I’m comforted by the fact I didn’t need to suffer through a festival …an over night festival at that. I would’ve certainly been there had it been a normal show.
But I was at the Modest Mouse show in Pomona on the 28th with the wife and she woulda been pissed if I ditched out cause I was too worn out from Danzig and Ministry. I’m sure there’ll be another show this summer we can all get together at.

Yeah, the hanging out was the best part. Gunnar is a mad man and I enjoy the circus. I also ran into some other OC friends of mine that I hadn’t seen in years.

Hanging
Beer drinking
Ministry
the freak show

The festival itself was a 2-day thing, but most of us didn’t take part in any of the Friday stuff.

As for “overnight” . . . it wasn’t mandatory. A lot of people were coming from afar and a lot others just didn’t want to drive home the same night . . . . hence we all swarmed the same hotel so we’d have a good rally point for everyone.

I never really thought I was a festival guy either, but if you got a bunch of friends to clown around with while the shitty bands you don’t care about are playing it’s actually a lot of fun.

I don’t care for festivals either. But this one was super small compared to something like Chicago Open Air.

This was more like a fairground fest.

Except no fried Twinkies.

Except no fried Twinkies.

Never heard of that…good I would assume?

No, terrible actually.

I’ve never actually had a fried Twinkie. I did have the deep fried Mars bar in UK. I don’t really need to do it again.

Wow, two from DSOTS and Filth Pig!..well that’s an encouraging change…

Shit that Greece set is pretty awesome. It would be perfect if they would drop some of the Bush stuff and throw in The Missing and Deity. But, at this point beggars can’t be choosers. I mean, Filth Pig. Fuckin A!

For sure. Good deal.

Oh man, filth pig supermanic and bad blood… i hope he brings that set list back to the states! I think punch in the face is one of his better tracks over the last 15 years. That should be a permanent addition to the set list.
