So, I’m not a big beer fan but I usually like dark beer if I have to drink. I definitely like (and by like I mean actually like not just tolerable for social occasions) Black and Tan. A couple years ago I bought this beer at a liquor store that was a Black and Tan called “Mississippi Mud.” It came in this old time hooch looking novelty jug. I was telling my neighbor about Black and Tan, he had never had it, and so I went to go buy that Mississippi Mud again today but it’s not available anymore. The guy at the liquor store around the corner from me said that the company that made it went bankrupt or was bought out by Budweiser but they don’t carry it any more because it’s not available from their distributor anymore. That sucks
So I started checking beer sites to see if anywhere close to me carried it and didn’t have any luck. So then I thought maybe there are other companies that bottle a Black and Tan beer, but when I google it the only things that really come up are “make it yourself” recipes.
So all of that jus to ask, does anyone know of any company that bottle a Black and Tan beer? Is there another brand besides Mississippi Mud?
I used to see the Mississippi Mud brand at Trader Joe’s. Check there.
Otherwise, as DJ says, make your own. There is a special spoon (I have one) for it, but I’m sure you could make do with a regular one.
For the record, the traditional Irish version is actually referred to as a Half & Half (Guiness and Harp).
Black & Tan, and its variations, are American concoctions. For example, Black & Blue is Guiness and Blue Moon. There are many different versions you can find at lame neighborhood sports bars.
JYeah i saw that sifter thing on amazon but they were all sold out. Id rather have the convenience of a bottle rather than dirtying a glass but i guess if comes to that… i saw they suggest black castle too. Guinness with new castle
I used to get it all the time at Trader Joe’s. I don’t remember if I’ve seen it there recently. If I find any I’ll let you know.
I’ve never made one myself, but I love ordering them at decent bars.
What Acid said about he nomenclature has a lot more weight to it, actually.
You do NOT want to ask for a “Black and Tan” in Ireland.
It’s not just about ordering something with the wrong name. There’s actually a nasty historical connotation as the “Black and Tans” were an actual thing, and it refers to some nasty mofos. When I was in Ireland for the “final Ministry shows ever” in 2008, I made this mistake several times and I didn’t know why the bartenders always treated me like shit. Later, an Irish dude straightened me out and enlightened me on my Ugly American behavior.
I like a variant of the black and tan/half and half (thank you for the education on that, Gunnar!) known in some places as a poisoned apple or a snakebite, one part Guinness and one part a cider, usually Angry Orchard at most bars I’ve been to. Delicious.
Yeah i knew about the “dont call it black n tan thing in Ireland”. It was like a private army or a mercenary squad that killed off a bunch of Irish people in Ireland. I didn’t know what you call it instead though. So thanks for the half and half.
Thanks for the link… i was just down there on Wednesday too. If ida known ida stopped in.
Yo, mix Guinness Extra Stout with a bottle of Easy Apple, which is less sweet and a bit more tart. It’s like breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one glass.
Sadly, we do not get Yeungling in California. I love that beer.
There is one bar here in Hollywood that carries it. The owner is from Philly, and he insists on having it, so he has sent to here illegally. He loses money on it, and sometimes runs out, but I respect his diligence.
Bevmo around the corner from Gunnar had it. So i did a curbside pick up yesterday. Got 6 bottles of the Mississippi Mud. A 4 pack of Segrams peach something (some kinda wine cooler) had 2 last night. Oh my god it was sooo fucking good. Barely taste the alcohol at all just beautiful peach goodness. Smurfette had me pick up some mikes hard strawberry lemonade and some grape something or other.
I have some Guinness extra stout i bought 2 days ago when I thought I wasnt gonna be able to get the mississippi mud. So based on ice’s recommend of hard cider and guinness i might try a half n half of the strawberry lemonade and guinness. Ill let you know how it goes when i get around to it.
