Bill Rieflin on new Angels Of Light album

So, as Jourgenson winds up dragging the name Ministry through the proverbial mud with his embarrassing forays into nu-metal ‘I hate the prez’ shennanigans and by announcing a tour with ex members of…um…dork-metallers Megadeth, Y&T and…um…Fear Factory, it’s comforting at the very least to know that at least one ex-Ministry member has gone on to fulfill quite a varied and impressive career resume.

Ex Ministry drummer Bill Rieflin can now be found as skinsmen for the very excellent Angels Of Light, led by one time Swans mouthpiece Michael Gira. And they have just released the VERY excellent new album ‘We Are Him’ - quite possibly the best album of Gira post Swans output.

I shouldn’t have to give reasons why this is essential listening material - that’d be like asking if Jesu were worth checking out (‘duh’). I’d say walk don’t run to yr nearest alterna-whatsit rekkid store, slap some money on the counter and soak up the Gira vibes. You won’t be disappointed.

And not a Fear Factory member in sight!!!

Ignoring the first and third paragraphs of your post, this is good. Angels of Light does good work and put on a hell of a live show.

I don’t see why you had to open that whole post up with your bullshit opinions.

I hate the new direction of Ministry as much as anyone but how the fuck is that relevant to this new band.

Just came off as pretentious and pompous (which is nothing new for you) and made me less interested in checking this band out.

And the Jesu comparison was wank. We all know Jesu is good. You don’t need to put them on some pedestal. It’s a good band, but if Broadrick doesn’t start doing a bit more experimenting within the sound they have developed I will lose interest.

Oh, and don’t act like Rieflin’s a fucking angel. He left Ministry during the recording of ‘Filth Pig’, their finest album, in order to join fucking R.E.M so go suck a dick, alright? kthnx

I’ve always wanted to check out more rieflin stuff, but never had the time and mainly the funds. Anyone here ever heard his solo album? I think it’s called “Birth of a Giant”, or something along those lines at least.

Actually Bill Berry was REM’s drummer when Filth pig was being made. And i think for another year or two after Filth Pig.

I also recommend Angels, but if you aren’t already familiar with the Swans maybe start off with them. Their early material was a huge influence on Broadrick. So if you are into Godflesh check out Cop/Young God or Filth. I don’t see jesu getting much more experimental as much as i see them getting more poppy. But shit I’d say making pop music is an experiment for him.

But off the jesu topic, i think Gira has made some of the best music around over the past 25 years. so give em a shot.

I picked it up when it came out. There’s like one or two stand out tunes & that’s it…to mellow for me.

If mellow’s the only issue, that’s fine. I’m a huge fan of the largo album he did with connelly. If anything like that, I would probably get into it.

Yeah’s…it’s similar.

reminds me of the hilt album cover

I was thinking about starting a thread for this. Bill Rieflin was also on Drainland and New Mother too. I absolutely looooooooooooovvvveee the angels of light. I listen to them basically every day. Micheal Gira along with Broadwick is one of the very few artists that gets better with age. I really can’t think of any band that puts more effort into making an album nowadays than the AOL.

It’s funny because I was reading through Drainlands lyrics the other day and noticed that Reiflin was a contributing artist, couldn’t help but think of the sad state of ministry nowadays without the help or real artists like Rieflin, Connelly, and Barker. I really can’t blame for Peligo bashing ministry in his posts.

Anways fuck the last sucker. I’ll be listening to “we are him” instead and looking foward to the AOl and Jesu touring this year. Too bad I’m going to miss out on the megadeath cameos this year lol.

What has happened to our friends when we allow the likes of Megadeth to impose on what we thought was valuable territory. Can this be justified?

I’m not sure where this thread is going but Megadeth or no I think it’s going to be a long wait til 2009.

I know what you are thinking though and you are wrong.

Megadeth
Anthrax
Annihilator
Death Angel
Testament
Overkill

If only you could see.

He’s no angel. I like his style and refer to it. Maybe he’s not the friend I thought he was.

Hope they pass thru here on tour.
Same here. I’d also like to see that Bill Rieflin/Robin Guthrie thing that Jed was talking about.

Being the Connelly - Rieflin - Barker fan that I am, I’m embarrassed to say that I’m just now getting into Pigface…

I didn’t like what I heard before, so gimmee a break.

Also, the cover art posted above is bril, pure n’ simple. No Vitalogy rip-off, there.

if you’re just getting into pigface… stick with “Welcome to mexico”, “gub”, “fook”, “washingmachine mouth”, and “truth will out”. most of the other stuff isn’t that good IMO. If you want to go somewhere form there try “hyperhead”.

Notes… is my fav Pigface album as a whole. plus Gira is on it which goes along with this thread.

i like welcome to mexico.

Bill gets around in bizarre places too. I was most surprised to see him collaborate with Toyah Wilcox. Not really my bag though.

You know you like Toyah. [:P]

Yeah…not sure about that, either.

FANTASTIC recommendation as always, Peligro. I’m losing my shit to this album right now, it’s just really incredible.
