Bill Nye Vs Ken Ham

Bill Nye released a youtube video saying that if you as an adult want to live in moron land and believe in creationism then that is fine but asks that you don’t subject your children to such nonsense.

Ken Ham, the owner operator and whatever else of the Creation Museum, posted a youtube response saying Bill Nye doesn’t know thing one about science.

So, now a debate is scheduled for Feb 4th at the creation Museum.

Ham’s video is a little over 4 minutes and I could barely make it through it. Ham is the type of person that would be labeled in my classroom as, “intentional Non-Learner.”

I’ve never heard so much stupid out of a grown man since George W pretended he was a man of the people, rather than illiterate, because he never used a teleprompter.

I listened to both. I thought both of the videos were self serving and neither one was better or worse than the other. I believe in evolution but I have to agree with Ham in that Nye did not present any decent reasoning for his case. I will most definitely not waste any time watching the debate.

???
Are you serious? Nye didn’t present any decent reasoning?

we need kids scientifically literate, not just fed a line of “It’s in the book so that makes it so.” That’s not self serving!

Just cause Ham said “critical thinking” multiple times doesn’t mean he displayed any…

I.E. “if evolution was real it would be readily apparent to the kids.”

you mean like the easily seen Atoms and molecules and the solar system revolving around the earth?

Ham’s is clearly snake oil. It troubles me anyone can’t easily spot the difference. [:(]

BTW, Ham’s displayed understanding of evolution in that video is nowhere near the actual theory of it. Scattering plane parts on a run way and hoping they magically assemble in the right order is the basis for creationism NOT evolution!

Me I’ll take an evolved airplane any day…

evolved into a jet

Well, for one thing Nye begs the question by insinuating that being scientifically literate is directly opposed to believing in creationism.

That’s not begging the question that’s fact. creationism does not stand up against Scientific method. Doesn’t even get past the first step. calling creationism Science is dangerous. So, yeah you can’t be a scientist AND believe in creationism. Thankfully believing in God doesn’t require believing in creationism.
I see you’re assumed begged question and call out your strawman! [;)]

You can’t believe in science and God at the same time?

Nobody said this, least of who Bill Nye. Belief in God does not hinge on believing in creationism. Most of the framers of the constitution were deists, believing in a God and education. If you want to take a hard biblical stance on God you could always argue that God made evolution possible. but what Ham is doing is akin to the church banishing Galileo in favor of ignorance. The earth being round and NOT the center solar system does not disprove God anymore than evolution would.

What about those people who built the pyramids, ancient Greece and Rome, etc? They believed in a whole slew of gods and look like what they accomplished.

I’m not sure this has anything to do with anything, simply because these gods were simply prayed to and were kept separate in their quest for knowledge. If anything the quest for truth in evolution would be done in their name and for their glory rather than squashed… That’s the difference, They still pursued knowledge and understanding while the modern christian seemingly is taught a disdain for knowledge and is not only content but almost ordered to be intellectually lazy.

There is more to life in believing in atoms, molecules, and amoebas. For many, hope and/or fear is what keeps them going and binds them together.

All true but as a responsible culture and being true to mankind it’s our duty to find out how Amoebas molecules and Atoms relate to and possibly control/shape that hope/fear. Understanding. with out it or the pursuit of it we may as well be children being dictated to by adults.

Just as Nye turns up his nose at creationism some people turn their noses up as gays and lesbians who are freaks of nature…

The two have nothing to do with each other. and they are not freaks of nature in that homosexuality is shown to exist all through out the animal kingdom. You want freak of Nature… how about marriage and monogamy? No other animals practice that. (Penguins monogamy… pretty much end the list.)

Nature screws up all the time and give people 2 sets of sex organs. You think that is God’s (that infallible being’s) creation? is it not possible that instead of being given two different sex organs that the wrong sex organ was assigned during development? seems much more plausible that this is the situation rather than God made Gays and Downs and every other deviated human existence for fun

their nature is certainly contrary to evolution since they would basically die off the population if they didn’t reproduce.

Their nature certainly is contrary to evolution but thankfully evolution accounts for standard deviation and it exists all through out nature which is why some of us are human and some of us are spiders. Lemmings jumping off of cliffs is also contrary to the stay alive data programmed into all of us. How come lemmings are still around? Comparing gays and lesbians to people who believe in creationism isn’t even close to a proper comparison. You’re comparing apples and left.

Should we attack gays and lesbians for acting/believing in something that isn’t scientifically ‘right’?

It is scientifically right based on standard deviation.
And seeing as how gays and lesbians don’t have a choice as to who they are that answer is no. Creationists do have a choice. Since, gays and Lesbians aren’t trying to keep progress stagnant that answer is no.

I don’t agree with your arguments but I don’t want to get into it. So we’ll just agree to disagree.

No passion. Unfortunate

I encourage you to watch all of it but if you can’t at least humor me and start it at 6:41 and finish it out.

This is why people like Mr. Ham and religion are dangerous.

I pretty much agree with everything Grmpy has already posted.

I think debates can get a bit childish and this probably isn’t going to be anything different than the typical science vs creationism debate. However, they are fun to watch.

What’s interesting is each generation is less religious than the previous. There are still believers, but from what I’ve observed most are not regular church goers and do not take the bible literally. It will be interesting to see the statistics for this 20 years from now.

Ya’ think? I don’t know, man. Maybe it’s just the area in which I live but I see Harvest Stickers all the time. The National polls show half the country believes in Angels or think Creationism should be taught in School.

Religion is about power/control (kinda like rape, now that I think of it) and it would seem to me Religion is still doing more damage than good out of sheer self interest and there are still a ton of people following it.

Wonder what the believer numbers are now versus late 70s early 80s numbers.

There are a lot of morons in the world and I think having something simple like creationism for them to believe in is a good thing. It’s kind of like a remote control with just 3 buttons instead of 50.

LOL I’ll definitely concede that point. but I think the over all problem is when those morons get their moron friends to elect them to school boards and city councils and they start monkeying (pun intended) with the laws and the textbooks and try to force us all to be morons
too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_and_Norma_Gabler "in addition to opposing textbooks that taught evolution, the Gablers also objected to “statements about religions other than Christianity, statements emphasizing contributions by minorities, and statements critical of slave owners.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_evolution_hearings It’s as if The Scope monkey trials never happened or they were having a do over.

http://billmoyers.com/content/messing-with-texas-textbooks/
" They removed Jefferson from a list of great Enlightenment philosophers — including John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Voltaire, Charles de Montesquieu and Jean Jacques Rousseau — who inspired political revolutions from the 1700s to today. They also removed the word “Enlightenment” and added Thomas Aquinas and John Calvin"

So, I would agree with you if it was just benign morons that kept to themselves, but they don’t. They feel like they have a duty to spread their Lunacy to others and if you already know better than what they’re pushing they will group together and mess with the laws in order to push their brand of stupid on the populace.
