Big Sexy Land cover art source

Someone posted this on the Wax Trax page on FB this morning, it’s the cover of a late '20s/early '30s magazine called Das Neue Frankfurt, by Adolf Loos. The 55 editions were numbered at the top, this appears to be compiled in a book, possibly “Theory and Works”, not sure.

Really cool!!!

I wonder if any other Shanley covers are based on obscure bits of design work.

Awesome find! Thanks for sharing.

very cool…thanks!

The single for You Often Forget is an homage/tribute to the cover for Physical Graffiti.

pretty neat

Loos was one of the great pioneers of modernism in architecture.

My firewall blocks photobucket. I’ll have to look at it when i get home.

1002, these guy are more modern and offer many features. http://imgur.com/

Thanks slack. I’ve had that Photobucket account for ages. Their site has become cluttered with ads and slow, so I wouldn’t mind the change. Cheers.

Nice find. It’s so blatant the art work borders on plagiarism. Interesting indeed.

Not really obscure, but didn’t Shanley do BS&Q? The cover an homage to the Caligula soundtrack.

The Chicks & Speed cover photos and design were heavily borrowed as well but I don’t recall where from. Anyone?

I was scanning thru an archive of old sci-fi magazine covers today, and stumbled across this interesting lil’ gem.

This is probably the best thread I can think of to dump this in (and apologies if this has already been posted on a KMFDM-related board somewhere, since I don’t hang out there):

Just judging from the color scheme and font at the bottom, I would be quite surprised if this isn’t the genesis of all the ‘Brute’ art for the majority of the KMFDM discography.

That’s cool. New Worlds had a lot of Ballard short stories if I recall correctly, so it’s got mad cache already. Brute really ran with the duo tone color scheme and font but I definitely see the inspiration.

What year is the New Worlds magazine from?

It’s from 1968.

Was also noticing the similarity between the actual content of that bottom text and KMFDM’s debut “What Do You Know, Deutschland?” although they didn’t start relying on that particular ultra-heavy typeface until the next album.

Wasn’t ‘New Worlds’ Michael Moorcock’s baby? Another writer who really helped to make sci-fi something other than just a “spaceships and robots” genre, and helped it cross over into the musical underground.

Although I could never get into Moorcock’s collabs with Hawkwind, much as I tried. I just can’t listen to the band singing “Needle, Needle, Needle Needle Gun…gonna make you run!!!” without laughing.

I like his collabs with Hawkwind even though they carry an obvious Spinal Tap-ish air to them…and of course his contributions to the mighty Blue Oyster Cult…di you ever hear his band called the Deep Fix?

His Elric of Melnibone and Sun Jester novels had a huge impact on me growing up…I definitely nerded out to that shit…
