Best turns in a song

Where cool songs get even cooler by going off in different direction:

Black Sabbath: ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ @ 03:19

Godflesh: ‘Us & Them’ @ 03:46

Tool: ‘Lateralus’ @ 07:17

Swans: ‘I’ll Swallow You’ @ 01:32

Opeth: ‘Deliverance’ @ 09:38

Witold Lutoslawski/Joey Altruda: ‘Novelette Conclusion/Lisa’ (medley from ‘INLAND EMPIRE’) @ 01:55

GY!BE: ‘Antennas to Heaven’ @ 17:02

I know there’s loads more that I’m forgetting, but fire away

The Sorrowful Wife - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Tons of Sabbath songs do that… Can’t list em all.

Second part of Pantera’s Hollow does it too…

Weird, that was the first song I was going to pick. The first few minutes plod along and create a sense of dread but when that riff comes in with the groove underneath it it just buries everything in its path.

2nd half of Just One Fix where the tempo picks up and they start playing the SOUTH OF HEAVEN riff.

6:43 of Hail and Farewell to Britain by ToN to use one example of their masterful ability to create anthemic hooks out of some of their dirges.

Slint: Good Morning, Captain at 6:40. I miss you!

Neurosis: The Tide at 4:55. One of their most crushing moments.

and my favorite Sabbath loud to quiet transition is easily the five minute mark of The Writ where the harpsichords start

How the fuck

could King Crimson’s

21st Century Schizoid Man

have gone UNMENTIONED?!?!?! [shocked]

Good call.

In all honesty,

Touch Screen - RevCo

RE animator - Fields of the Nephilim.

Not a drastic change but definetly different from the rest of the song.

Godflesh- Christbait Rising 2:41

If we’re going just musical I’m going to go with “To Live Is To Die” by METALLICA!
That sweet Classical Intro then to the pounding guitars and drums ending in sweet classical outro.
Late,

MEHTALLICA have LOAD(s) of great dynamic changes.

  • Second half of The Four Horsemen
  • Clean dual guitar lead in Master of Puppets
  • Bass/two guitar interplay during Orion
  • One (duh)
  • The heavier parts of Bleeding Me
