I’m looking for some good music that is being made these days so I’m wandering what are this board’s members’ favorite releases of this year so far. I am especially interested in the industrial/drone/noise categories but anything will do.
Some of my favorites this year are:
Jesu - S/T
Kill The Thrill - Tellurique
Khanate - Capture & Release
Sunn O))) - Black 1
Fields Of The Nephilim - Mourning Sun
Red Sparrowes - At The Soundless Dawn
I will add more as I remember them or discover new great albums.

Sunn O))) - Black 1
You have this? Download? Is it really that good?
Best so far -
Autechre - Untilted
Earth - Legacy Of Dissolution
Earth - Hex Or Printing In The Infernal Method
Asva - Futurists Against The Ocean
Twilight - s/t
Jesu - s/t
Animal Collective - Feels (ok this isn’t out yet but I just know it’ll slay…)
Boards Of Canada - Campfire Headphase (ditto)
(Their newest release…a single 30 minute jam that is unreal and twisted. Merges their usual brand of homemade gadgets with some new elements like gongs, sheet metal and a harmonica to name a few…Great spacey nightmarish soundscape noise stuff, but warning: no drum machines for those who like the stompy Wolf Eyes tracks!!!)
Pelican - March Into the Sea
(Bought this on a whim because it has a remix by Justin Broadrick of Godflesh/Jesu and it’s great. Amazing progressive rock track that mutates several times and then becomes this beautiful acoustic guitar/keyboard interlude that builds and builds. Amazing for those into stoner rock like Isis and the like, but this time more progressive on almost a King Crimson level. The JK Broadrick remix is pretty good with crunchy beats reminding us of his past)
Fantomas - Suspended Animation
(Awesome avante-ADD experimental metal by this underground supergroup featuring Mike Patton and some dude from the Melvins and the drummer from Slayer. If you’ve heard other Fantomas, this one is more cartoony and carnival-sounding…literally…we’re talking old ass cartoon samples and shit!!! and is packed with sweet samples and awesome moments. Even more bizarre and insane than the band’s previous efforts.)
The Locust - Safety Second Body Last EP
(SWEET!!! If you like these guys or if you like spazz metal/ ADD experimental metal/ whatever the fuck it is called…THIS GENRE NEEDS A NAME…with bands like An Albatross and Melt Banana…then this EP is a must. The Locust have two tracks here that are actually long ones, not little spaztic outbursts like on previous albums. Here they balance the hyperspeed guitar temper tantrums with experimental, drone-like passages and increasing use of experimental electonic keyboard wizardry to form arrangements that are more orchestral in structure. Yes its that cool and a glimpse at their future sound.)
Yeah, its a download. Its a bit more… accessible than previous Sunn O))) releases and has more in common with black metal than ever before. I like it quite a lot but not as much as the previous albums. Its still one of the better releases of this year.
I checked out the Asva album and was totally blown away! Thanks for mentioning it. Its good to see Trey Spruance is not misplacing his talent like Patton is.
Yeah, I love this but it took me ages to get into, the only other Autechre album to this was Incunabula, so all the noises and squeaks and shit were totally alien to me. Fucking deadly album though, after I gave it enough time. Still some of the songs take their time to “start up” and get going. For some unknown reason Augmatic Disport reminds me of the Terminator films [:)]

I organized a concert with them last month here in France. Jessika Kenney wasn’t there, so it was a full instrumental set. The best part being a one and a half hour jam session with SUMA, the other band on the bill (www.suma.bazz.nu), starting at 1AM after the public left. Imagine 2 organs, 2 bass, 3 guitars, drums, percussions and people switching from one instrument to the other. The whole thing was filmed. I hope to get a copy of the film soon.
HYATARI - The Light Carriers
OM - Variations On A Theme
CHURCH OF MISERY - The Second Coming (released in 2004, I know…)
MINSK - Out Of A Center Which Is Neither Dead Nor Alive
CORRUPTED - El Mundo Frio
SWORD - Lord By Fire
JESU - S/T
KHANATE - Capture & Release
KILL THE THRILL - Tellurique
PHOBOS - Tectonics
CROWPATH - Sun Of Sulfur
NAPALM DEATH - The Code Is Red…Long Live The Code
UFOMAMMUT - Lucifer Songs
BLUT AUS NORD - Thematic emanation of archetypal multiplicity
V/A - We Reach: The Music Of The Melvins
