Deep dish is just way too much bread for me.

not even that it’s too much dough… but like an inch or so of dough and to get a comperable amount of sauce so it’s not just dried break, is alot and just the grease and ech… disgusting… personally if you’re coming to the states go to “white castle”. you’ll walk away with much more of an eye opening experience than a piece of pie. Not only with stories of the cooky mini burgers and whatnot that’s on the menu “the burgers gots holes in them” but also the neighborhoods that the places are in tend to provide a decent tale or two in and of themselves.

I’m lucky enough to live only a few blocks from what I consider the best pizza I’ve ever eaten, the original Aurelio’s. Granted, there is a small chain of them now in and around Chicago, but the original is still at the top of it’s game and hasn’t changed in decades. We go so far as to request that our pizza is baked in the ‘old oven’ which produces a crispier crust than the newer oven.
Best pizza? Man, ANY pizza is good pizza.
The best pizza I’ve ever had was from some inconspicuous mom & pop place somewhere in New England that was doughy, greasy, and loaded to the brim with just about everything you could imagine. I mean, Goddamn. Sure, I was probably high at the time, but I distincly remember that it was the greatest thing I’ve ever eaten.
Know what sounds damned good right now? A calzone with everything in it and a six pack of Corona.
Oh, man, I’m salivating over here…
I could eat pizza 'til my head fell off.
The base has to be perfect - that’s the secret. Not too doughy or brittle. The toppings have to be greasy and garlicy and sausagey - plenty of spices too!
senor wempathy shall we exchange greaseball stories or what.
You’ll find good pizza in most major cities. Phoenix is ‘transplant nation’, so we actually have lots of pizzerias that are NY/Chicago-owned, so no travel is necessary to get a good deep dish or NY thin slice of pie (my place close to home is a guy from Jersey, and it’s phenomenal). As far as sheer volume of good pizzerias, Chicago and NY will obviously have Phoenix beat, but people move, and take their recipes with them, so wherever you go, you’ll find good pie.
Someone once told me that there’s something in the water in NY that changes the taste of the dough and makes it “real NY pizza”, but whatever. Definitely do your research, and you’ll find good pie. I love thin NY slices of nothing but cheese, but am also a big fan of sausage, mushrooms and black olives.
I also like gourmet pies when done right. We have a place in town called Pizzeria Bianco that has apparently won a bunch of awards for ‘best pizza in the country’, but that sort of claim is so subjective. They do have killer wood-fired pizza, but the wait is always 2-3 hours just to get inside, it’s ridiculous. I don’t like to fill up on crust, so I always find myself eating the thinner, NY-style slices, and it comes down to good cheese and sauce, really. If you happen to be swinging through AZ, let me know and I’ll hook you up with some good places (or meet ya for a slice!). Speaking of, Icepick needs to get his ass down to the Valley for a hangout…yesterday!

In order to eat the pie from the place down the block when I was a kid, it was important to place a sheet or two of paper towels on the top for a couple of seconds. It came in a paper sleeve that was usually soaked through by the time you got it home. It dripped grease.
They still make the best meatball sammiches though. I still stop in about once on month on a Thursday…when all the ingredients are fresh.
the sicilian bakery at grand and pulaski made the only authetic cannolis i’ve had to this day.the bakery was next to the mister bendo shop on grand.
and of course, kitty corner to that, was jimmy’s hot dogs.
the guy who owned jimmy’s hot dogs put money into drag racing or some such shit.
best beef, let me repeat—grand and ogden, if it be still there.

ah chicago. land of the free and home of the brave.
Chicago. New York. Los Angeles.
You’re gonna laugh but all that sounds so fucken exotic. Compare that to ‘Mordialloc, Victoria, Australia’ (the town, state, country I live in). It’s a joke.
I hate living ‘Down Under’. It’s a million miles from ANYWHERE and nothing ever happens here - except for the occasional bushfire or outbreak of cattle disease or sporting event. So boring. Who the fuck has ever heard of Mordialloc. I feel like such a pleb.
One day I will come over there and stay at one of yr houses. As long as it’s not grmpy’s house - we’d kill each other over politics.

Hell yeah, I do.
GOD, this thread has my organs EATING themselves.
I seriously am in dire need of a slice.
I’ve actually been eating “peekza” every day this week. I try to work out so I dont turn into a chubbysaures rex, in fact I think I actually lost some poundage.
Pizza is like pussy. The worst Ive ever had was still pretty good. I live in Chicago so Im kinda jaded. I do dig the New York stuff as well though.
Pizza ? California ? Hey wempathy , if you come around. Where is the original Aurelios ? I have eaten at one back in the day in the Joliet area. I seem to recall them being very good.

Homewood.
Peligro you’re a whining fucking bastard. I’ve tasted pizza from places all over the world and THE BEST ever is a short drive from you.

Oh, snap. I totally forgot about this one…
The best chain pizza pie I’ve ever had was at Round Table Pizza with my then-girlfriend. We decided to go halvesies on a large. She orders naught but black olives (the fucking hippie), and I ask for everything concievable, in those exact words. Well, damn, did they take me literally. Fifteen minutes later, my half of the pie is utterly COATED in the most glorious clusterfuck of toppings I’ve ever seen.
Seriously. Pepperoni, olives, green and red peppers, jalapenos, sausage, some unknown other kinds of meat, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, pineapple, etc., etc., etc., until I spy something that totally blows me away.
SHRIMP.
MOTHERFUCKING SHRIMP.
… GOD, I’m hungry.
Had myself 2 slices of truck pizza last night… i made my last visit to the city last night before moving and couldn’t resist. yummy.
Truck pizza, sister to truck meat?
