Best of 2009

my favorite album of the year, which I’ve only gotten to listen to in full 2 or 3 times since it came out, has to be Reformed Faction’s “I Am the Source of Light, I am not a Mirror” .
This is the project of Robin Storey (Rapoon) and Mark Spybey (Dead Voices on Air) , both from Zoviet France in the past. Check out the packaging of this sucker, comes in a concrete box with their logo on it, it’s a triple album, and comes with a button, a patch, a book of their art, and a mini 3" cd with a bonus 20 minute long track! Now I usually don’t give a crap about artwork these days, but this package truly makes me proud to own it:

other standout albums for me:
Dead Voices on Air- Fast Falls the Eventide + Abrader reissue
Mark’s latest album is truly spectacular and, like that Reformed Faction album, flows perfectly. Plus it comes packaged with his first release which was cassette only, remastered. Long, droney noisy tracks with bonus tracks with cEvin Key as a guest!

Rapoon- Dark Rivers
I like this alot, as it seems to have a feel of his earlier period Rapoon records, which I really like.

Rapoon- Melancholic Songs of the Desert
This is more of a combination of all the recent Rapoon sounds into one. Pretty cool stuf.

There’s been another Rapoon album that was just released that’s on it’s way from the label in Russia. Another one is supposed to be out too.

Throbbing Gristle: Third Mind Movement
this is the type of TG I like. strange, subtle, mostly instrumental ambient noise.

Lots of stuff I need to pick up. I missed out on the extra 3" CDR version of Reformed Faction but I plan to download the album at the least. Didn’t realize a couple of new Rapoons out, just downloading them now! I’ve been really getting back into Coil, Muslimgauze and Rapoon over the past few weeks, so I’m quite pleased that one of the three are still alive and making music!

jj and the xx top my list for new albums, love both fully and deeply. Need to hear the new TG, wish it was available through download. I’m downloading new Rapoon right now.

For a list of 2009 stuff I really liked I’d say in reverse alphabetic order:

Yeah Yeah Yeahs “It’s Blitz”
the xx “the xx”
Very Best “Warm Heart of Africa”
Two Fingers “Two Fingers”
Say Hi “Ooohs and Aaahs”
Phoenix “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart “s/t”
Major Lazer “Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Kill People”
Lady Gaga “The Fame Monster”
Kora! Kora! Kora" “The Cabaret Voltaire Versions”
jj “No. 2”
Lee “Scratch” Perry and Dubblestandart “Return from Planet Dub”
Dollars and Cents “Unabridged Soundtrack to Future Movie”
David Guetta “One Love”
Amanda Blank “I Love You”

Most industrial stuff I listened to this year was from the 80s. Lots of indie stuff this past year because that’s where the stuff I extra loved was happening in 2009. Richard H. Kirk made me happy by putting out a few goodies this year, Dollars and Cents being a fantastic and strange cut-up album. Happy the man hasn’t lost it.

ah, how could I have forgotten Two Fingers…really liked that disc as well. Thunderheist was fun for about a week as well.

green death, would you be interested in me uploading the bonus track from the 3" Reformed Faction album? I don’t mind at all. Glad to hear you’re checking out the new Rapoon as well! I’m trying to fill in the gaps with some of the Rapoon I don’t have yet. Thinking of Just Say the Faith and Church Road as my next purchases.

That’d be fantastic if you uploaded the 3", I was bummed to have missed it!

I have Just Say the Faith on vinyl and I always liked that one. Haven’t heard Church Road yet, let me know how it is!

Another late entry…this one just in although it hasn’t hit the USA yet…this one goes to the top 3 of 2009 easily for me…

Press Info…

Lindstrom & Christabelle : “Real Life Is No Cool”

The original pairing for the very first Feedelity release way back in 2003 finally make the album we’ve all been waiting for. Together sultry vocalist Christabelle (aka Solale) and Hans-Peter Lindstrom have come up with an edgy pop album of structured chaos and hypnotic beats - futuristic disco with its roots in the past. Evidence of the duo’s influences runs through the set, from the Giorgio Moroder style electrodisco of “Let’s Practice” and cosmic electronics on Vangelis cover “Let It Happen”, via “Baby Can’t Stop” paying tribute to Quincy Jones era MJ and “Keep It Up” channelling the spirit of Prince to the Italo piano bomb “So Much Fun”. And that doesn’t even mention dirty cosmic grinder “Lovesick” – three of the most seductive minutes on the whole set. The last essential album release of 2009!

And another I forgot was the fantastic Lindstrom & Prins Thomas LP…
