This year has been exceptional for music. My favourites are:

I’ve literally never heard of any of those. And I’ve only heard a couple of the bands. We must run in very different circles.

In Letter Form - Fracture Repair Repeat

But there are many more that I haven’t had a chance to fully digest yet. And a lot on the way that promise to be very good (Pig, En Esh, Panic Lift, Rotersand, Mesh, A23, etc.)

Also were plenty of disappointments this year. Several albums that I was pretty interested to hear that just didn’t turn out as I’d hoped.

ive been trying to get into current music lately, i just cant.

seems like every band sounds the same. way too many fruity indie bands out there and people who think theyre experimental but only use that label because they sound like shit and can’t categorize themselves.

maybe im looking in all the wrong places though.

I think SMM is the only “new” album of 2016 I got.
So . . . there’s my list.
Even though it sorta sucks.

Having fully immersed myself in SMM, it’s the first 5 songs and “Gates of Steel.” Then I stop listening. Everyone was all stoked for “I’m Invisible,” but eh, it’s boring. Shoulda been an EP.

Here’s what I got for “best” of 2016, so far:

Anthrax “For All Kings”
Swans “The Glowing Man”
Iggy Pop “Post Pop Depression”
Dinosaur Jr “Give a Glimpse of What Yet Not”

I don’t LOVE any of these, really. Swans is really good, but you have to really devote time to 20 minute songs. But, I’ve listened to the new Anthrax a ton this year.

She’s opening for Ghost on the next leg of their tour. I’ve got tickets for the show in Montreal.

Is she worth going to as an opening act? Or do I just pre-drink at my absolute favourite bar that is literally right next door to the venue?

Assemblage 23-Endure (got an advance copy through Tom Shear’s kickstarter campaign. Not his best, but really good)

Pink Floyd-Early Years Box Set (Coming out in November. I’ve heard a good chunk of it, really good stuff)

I’m really looking forward to the new Enigma album coming out later this year, as well as VNV Nation’s Compendium box set.

She is one of my current favorite living musicians. So I highly recommend going.
But look her up on Youtube and see if it’s your bag.

It is hard for me to remember what came out this year, but I have a few of my favorites and a few of my disappointments.

Top albums in no order

  1. Scandroid-S/T If you are fans of 80’s Synth Pop, then you should check this out.
  2. Testament - Brotherhood of the Snake - With Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax releasing albums, this one seems to get overlooked.
  3. Circle of Dust - Machines of our Disgrace. Fantastic Industrial Metal. The genre has needed an album like this.
  4. Cyanotic - Clear a Path. Just a single, but I dig the vibe of this one and can’t wait to hear the full length.
  5. Delerium - Mythologie

Albums that disappointed

Pig- The Gospel. I have tried repeatedly to get into this one, and I can’t. It isn’t bad, but it seems forced to me and lacks the “grime” that past Pig albums have had.
16 Volt - The Negative Space. Another one that I just don’t get. Experimentation is good, but this went a little too far off path for me.
Army of the Universe - 1999. Another highly anticipated album that leaves no mark on me.
