Beer

I’m sure there are many whisky fans on this board but personally, I think beer is the best thing in the world. There are as many flavors of beer as there are of wine, particularly in Europe. Wine is great when one wants to get laid, but beer is universal and fits every possible social situation.

So, do we have any more beer fans here? Is it true that all American beer is basically piss water? I can say for sure that all the imported American beer here is pure shit…

Personally, I just cant get enough of various small European brews that arent filtered or pasteurized. Its a whole different taste and as an added bonus, these beers rarely have less than 6.5% alcohol in them. I generally drink lager, but a good weiss or kolsch or even a stout or porter can also be good from time to time.

I’d say a good amount of beer for a night out is about 6-7 pints, although I have gone well above this amount many a time.

My fav is actually an ale…this South Australian beauty…

Coming in a close second is this classic lager from the motherland…

I’m actually really lucky as I have a little shop a couple of doors up here in Edinburgh that sells both of them.

So everytime I’m heading out clubbing or whatever I buy about 2 or 3 of each and down them while digging through records I haven’t heard for ages.

This is more like it.

I thought I liked beer until I visited Berlin then I realised I loved it. Can’t remember the name of one such beer (started with a G and was short enough) but each slug was wholesome. At home I usually drink stout as common lager beers in pubs are unspectacular to say the least. Though good stout is hard enough to come by too, for the good quality first few rounds you need to visit an old man’s pub as it won’t be watered down or flat.

On a usual night out I’m looking at maybe a few cans before heading out, 5-6 pints in a pub then whatever else I can afford in a club which usually exceeds another €50. If heading out late and going straight to a club or gig it’s customary to knock back a naggin or shoulder of whiskey and maybe some shots then waste all my money on overpriced beverages elsewhere.

I do love whiskey though. The best of the affordable mainstream lot is undoubtedly Jameson (triple distilled, using old vats). Shane McGowan has the spirit of things:

"Last night as I Slept
I dreamt I met with Behan
I shook him by the hand and we passed the time of day
When questioned on his views
On the crux of life’s philosophies
He had but these few clear and simple words to say

I am going, I am going
Any which the way wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

I have cursed, bled and sworn
Jumped bail and landed up in jail
Life has often tried to stretch me
But the rope always was slack
And now that I’ve a pile
I’ll go down to the chelsea
I’ll walk in on my feet
But I’ll leave there on my back

Because I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

Oh the words that he spoke
Seemed the wisest of philosophies
There’s nothing ever gained
By a wet thing called a tear
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I’ll walk into a bar
And drink fifteen pints of beer

I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing

I am going, I am going
Any which way the wind may be blowing
I am going, I am going
Where streams of whiskey are flowing
Where streams of whiskey are flowing
Where streams of whiskey are flowing"

I cannot for the life of me understand how stuff like Bud Light is popular. Why would anyone want to pay to drink urine?

Our good beers don’t get exported nearly as much as our awful beers. Micro-breweries are really flourishing in the States. My favorite is Central Waters from Wisconsin (where we really know our beer!). The beer is delicious, and I found out while visiting the brewery that the whole operation is solar powered.
Trivia: The largest American brewing company is now Sam Adams. All of the bigger companies are actually owned by groups in other countries (ie: Miller is owned by a South African company).

Re: Bud Light…

Hey, it gets the job done, what can I say? Granted, given my druthers and enough funs, that’s the last thing on my mind, but if you bring a case of BL to a party, no one bitches about it. It’s a good universal beverage. Besides, lime and salt to wonders to it, and as far as I can tell, the best way to drink a Bud Light is chelada-style with some Clamato.

Granted, I’m nowhere NEAR being a connoiseur, but damn, do I love beer.

My favorites so far…

Corona
Sol
Tecate
Negro Modelo
Arrogant Bastard
King Cobra

…Jesus, am I Mexican.

I am not a big beer drinker, but I do like Newcastle Brown Ale so that is it usually. If I am in the mood I’ll go out to this specialty bar that is nearby that imports a ton of the European brews.

LoL Icepick being Mexican is an honor, and I love Modelo to.

My friend just came back from a trip to Mexico and brought with him some beer called Victoria. Its mighty damn good easily the best beer I’ve had in a long time, better than most commercial Mexican beers. I drink Steel Reserve sometimes when I’m low on cash, it tastes like balls but it gets you thrown… dawg!

Ah, toot, you are a man with taste, coopers green is a fantastic drop. All the hippies drink it here because it is supposedly one of the few vegen beers. (Something about how most beer is filtered through sheep guts or something, but don’t quote me.) Best Aussie beer I reckon. Just remember to roll it!

Best Aussie beer I reckon. Just remember to roll it!

Oh absolutely.

I was over the moon when I discovered they sold Coopers Pale Ale here in Scotland!

The normal Coopers is a good one too…the Pale kicks major ass though…the hippies are on the ball.

My new favourite is Molson M. Not sure if it’s out anywhere else but Canada yet, but it’s a whole new type of beer.

According to the website:
Molson M. The only Microcarbonated™ lager. During its unique revolutionary microcarbonation process the beer is injected with CO2 through smaller, finer bubbles with precision and consistency to attain a level of carbonation that we believe to be close to perfection. Patent pending.

My taste buds agree. Although, perhaps the fact that I work for them may give me a slight bias. =)

FTW

Not big on Corona’s, I must say Icepick… I reckon they’re possibly the most overrated beer out there.

BUT,

Salito’s on the other hand…

oh, shit yeah…

Tequila + Beer, could it get possibly any better than that?

Bought a 6 of Rogue Mocha Porter the other night.
One of my faves.

Guinness, Murphy’s Irish Stout, Newcastle, La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, or a good Dunkel.

The best beer is cider.

Which isn’t beer at all.

I don’t like beer.

I don’t care for liquor much.

Gandhi never drank.

Know what I’m sayin’?

Peligro,

I have to get some Hoegaarden, Bitburger or Absinthe with apple juice, mint, honey (bit of water to break it up, of course) into ya, and you’ll never look back.

Beer is an awesome way of dealing with our dreary, grey reality. Who gives a shit about Gandhi?

Guinness, Murphy’s Irish Stout.

I like the dark beers as well, if it has to be beer. would much rather drink whiskey if I’m gonna be drinkin! Although I had some Belgium beer this past week it was called Leffe I think. fucking tasty beer kinda had a Clove taste to it!
Late,

I love Coopers, red mainly but Pale Ale can be ok. If I want to feel like a bogan I’ll drink some Corona, though it is a decent enough beverage it really needs the lime to do anything.

I actually find the red Coopers a little nasty, the way you can really taste the alcohol… Not my thing.

I like things a little nasty.

Come on, can you blame me? It was just wide open.
