Bands you just can't get into

Oh yeah and Grunge… I just never understood that stuff. I know Nirvana is like god, and I can see why. Just not big on Grunge.

Led Zeppelin - they were bad enough the first time around in the '70s. I never want to hear anything by that band again except Tangerine and No Quater.

At least you like two of their best songs

Thin Lizzy

Would the new lineup of RevCo count? I mean it is a completely different band than what it used to be

As far as Led Zeppelin goes the only other album I’ve heard is II (not really a fan of that) obviously I’ve heard their other popular songs but as far as album goes II & IV is all I’ve heard and as far as I’m concerned II is as bad as IV is good!
so far I kind I guess I could throw them down in the bands with 1 good album thread but I guess I can’t since I’ve only heard 2 albums…I’m babbling. I’m outta here

For me Led Zeppelin’s early work is pretty boring, formulaic “classic rock” that doesn’t interest me very much.

Right around Led Zeppelin IV is where I think it begins to get interesting. Side one of Physical Graffiti is one of my favorites, lots of noisy guitars and hard hitting drums. Houses of the Holy is good too, their most experimental one.

So yeah, I think some of their lesser celebrated material (the kind they don’t play constantly on classic rock radio) is worth checking out.

My father in law is a zep fan so ill end up with the whole catalog sooner or later. I just branched out at his urging starting with II (just branched out he didn’t urge II) and that was a swing and a miss. I wanted to get houses but amoeba didn’t have that used and the new copy they had was 20 bucks so I went with the 8 dollar II ill try to get houses next even if I have to go to the internets. right now I have no drive for it though.

I’d give Houses a spin before you buy it… it’s experimental and you may not like all that that experimentation yields, I find it hit or miss, but still an interesting album. I’d personally recommend IV and Physical Graffiti though… I just got into them myself recently and still haven’t heard all their material.

Led Zeppelin II is the most overrated of their albums. Thank You is just an awful song and Whole Lotta Love doesn’t deserve to be a classic even if it has an unforgettable refrain. Compare the thunderous instrumental work of the debut (still can’t stand the blues jams, might have been novel in '69 but irritating now) to the limp dicked wankery of the second. Can’t hold a candle.

Houses of the Holy holds the most replayability for me. Even the misguided attempts at reggae and funk are entertaining and “The Ocean”, “Over the Hills” and “No Quarter” are some of their best.

Most underrated Zep song? “Carouselembra”.

Houses of the Holy, LZ’s 5th album, is epic. The first two albums are really just blues rehash. The 4th album, the ‘runes’ album, is considered by many mainstream listeners to be their best.

My fave? III. What can I say? I’m a sucker for psychedelic folk and stuff like “Out on the Tiles”.

I’d sooner say the 4th album is the most overrated for one reason: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
Houses Of The Holy is their best album because of the experimentation. Some of the songs are straight forward rock, but then you got moments of classical, funk, reggae and then the best song they ever did No Quarter. I believe its their best work. BBC Sessions is another must have if you wanna hear early live Zeppelin

Amen. It’s my favorite too.
They were really into the whole Fairport Convention/Steeleye Span/etc. scene back then. It carried over into IV when the had Sandy Denny guest star, too.

Also, it’s got Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, which is the greatest song ever written about the joys of taking your dog for a walk.

I’d sooner say the 4th album is the most overrated for one reason: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

I have consistantly skipped that track for the shorter part of 15 years. I didn’t even include it when I ported the album over to the ipod! I’ll listen to it if its on the radio but I won’t intentionally put it on. The song doesn’t fit with the mood of the album anyway. Fave tracks on IV are going to california and when the levee breaks

I agree Stairway is way overrated and I too leave it off my playlist of the album and won’t listen to it if it’s on the radio. I think learning to play the song when I was 13 or so made me even more tired of the song.

However, The Battle of Evermore and When the Levy Breaks alone are enough to make Zep IV a classic.

Did you know “When the Levee Breaks” is a cover?
My father in law told me about that about 2 months ago!
He said it’s some old blues song from the 20’s (or there abouts). Blew my mind!

Many, many Zep songs are based on old blues or folk songs.

Never thought I’d read about Led Zeppelin in a thread about bands people can’t get into. I don’t think they ever made a bad album - even In Through The Out Door blows my mind.

And all this talk about Stairway To Heaven being overrated - why? That song still sends a shiver up my spine when I’m driving late at night and all alone. The part where it slowly gives way and drops a minor key and starts to progressively build…

II is a classic - but I agree there are a few stinkers that were coughed up early on. Those blues rehashes don’t sit particularly well with me.

Without bands like Led Zeppelin, The Stooges, Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, you would never have had yr ‘Alternative Revolution’ in the early 90s.

Aside from The Beatles, how many bands can you name that have as many bona fide ‘classics’ as Zeppelin?

Stairway To Heaven
Kashmir
Whole Lotta Love
Dazed And Confused
Communication Breakdown
Immigrant Song
Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You
In The Evening
No Quarter
Black Dog

etc etc

Ones you forgot to list

Trampled Under Foot
Achellis Last Stand
Custard Pie
Tangerine
Out On The Tiles
How Many More Times
Ten Years Gone
Wearing And Tearing
Walter’s Walk
Ramble On
Hearbreaker/Living Lovin Made
and all of Houses Of The Holy

Getting into the WABAC machine, it was written and performed by Joe McCoy, and Minnie Memphis or is it Memphis Minnie.

I think it was Minnie Memphis. that names rings a bell I don’t think I’ve ever heard the name Joe McCoy

I think it’s just boring because we over played it. Whereas, I have played the rest of those songs on IV way more times than Stairway and they have not lost their excitement the way Stairway did. Perhaps in the right setting Stairway could recapture the magic but I haven’t run into it yet.

Absolutely! Zeppelin I think have done more for music than any other band. You can hear Zep’s influence from crappy bands too brilliant bands!
