Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

Saw this last night and it was brilliant, so much so I thought I’d give it its own thread. Has anyone seen it?

Directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicholas Cage (yes, Nicholas Cage!) it was a cinematic treat. Briefly, Cage plays a cop in New Orleans investigating the murder of an African family while on a dose of painkillers, cocaine, and anything else he can find. He’s running up gambling debts and finds himself getting roped into all sorts of shenanigans. But there’s a constant streak of humour running through the story (completely unlike Abel Ferrara’s ‘Bad Lieutenant’), I had a pain in my jaw at times from laughing. Herzog made New Orleans look fascinating (never been there) and the music was also cool. I’d love to hear from people who saw the film and are from or familiar with the place to see what they think of it. The film is nicely original as well, completely devoid of contrivance, people basically come and go in the film.

I could not find fault with it and am dying to see it again. Am going to look out for a soundtrack too.

I HATE Nicholas Cage and LOVED the original film so when I first heard about this I was dubvious to say the least. Regardless it sounds like it’s worth a watch.

I watched it while really fucking drunk and loved it. Here’s a teaser to whet your appetite, skeptics:

Is this a re-make of the Harvey Keitel classic?

It’s a totally new story. The guy that owns the rights to the name “Bad Lieutenant” is trying to create a franchise out of it.
Other than that and the fact that it’s about corrupt cops, they have no connection.
