if what he says is right slash isn’t the hero of the story.

having read slash’s autobio i get the feeling axl is a little right and slash is a little right… i think axl took then name and that slash was not tricked into giving it up. but i do think that axl’s drastic change in direction of where he wanted the band to go did kinda set the others off… but eh, who knows.

I find Slash more credible but not for the obvious reasons…
Jesus, Axl’s post was hard as fuck to read, he needs an editor or a fuckin punctuation class…I’m the last guy to bitch about grammar on the internet but holy shit that was bad!!
If you read over Axl’s entire transcript Axl constantly goes back on what he says, “Slash was manipulative…” but in the next sentence talks about how slash didn’t deserve the gnr name, because when it came to contract negotiations slash said “I don’t care.” Which one is it Axl? He was manipulative or he didn’t care? Next, Slash has consistantly been in touch with his fans, and been the same humble dude, where has Axl been if he’s not shitting on the fans? hiding out until he needed to drum up some publicity for his failing album!! Axl has NO credibility. Perhaps Axl should’ve just sang the songs the way he was “told to sing them” and his band would be a little more successful at this moment in time…

(this is some of what I posted on rollingstone)

That “Letter” was not an actual letter. It was just a poorly organized transcript summery of multiple chat session he had with his fans on a message board. I pretty much side with Axl on this one. I think the new record is very well done and honestly to me it seems like it’s the “cool” thing to do if you hate the record. Nothing the guys in Velvet Revolver have released has even a fraction of the courage that was necessary to create Chinese Democracy. I really don’t want to seem like a huge guns fan from this post. Truth is, other than this record I have only heard UYI 2(and thought it was pretty solid) and AFD(and only liked a third of it). I know everyone has their own opinions but it just really bugs me when this cd is totally trashed like people seem to do. I had waited for this cd as long as everyone else. I heard the leaks in 2006 when they first got released and thought that those would probably be the only good songs on the album. Finally when I went to best buy and got the album I was more than sure I would be unimpressed with what I heard. But once I got past the third track i knew it was fucking great. Sorry to rant but I dont know…with just such a shortage of good music these days it really fucks with me to see an honest effort that actually come out good get trashed so badly.

Don’t get me wrong, dude, i like it. I wouldn’t say it took courage to make this album, though… It’s a pop record, and it doesn’t take courage to make a pop record… For me, I’m not trashing the record, I guess I’m trashing the labeling. For example, when Paul left Ministry and Al started making speed/thrash metal, many said that it’s ok speed/thrash metal but it’s NOT Ministry. Meaning, It’s pretty good for what it is, but it’s NOT Ministry. I guess I’m in that camp for GNR…
I have quite a few bootlegs and of course their whole studio catalogue (Including Chinese Democracy on CD and Vinyl) and what Axl just put out is good, BUT IT’S NOT GNR. As far as the first 3 songs being good… well, I’ll give you “Better” (best song on the cd imo-probably the closest thing to a real GNR song, but still miles away from one ) but “Shackler’s…” and “S/T” are horrid easily the worst songs on the cd.
Even had Slash stayed on, the songs still wouldn’t be quite perfect because Izzy Stradlin was their chief song writer. He’d come up with rhythm/chord progressions and most of the melodies for Slash to solo over. so I guess it’s a lose lose situation for Axl. For me, GNR is those three guys; song writer(Izzy), lyricist(Axl) and lead guitar(Slash), Drums and bass are simple and easily replaced…
I do find it humorous though, that Axl needed 150,000 guitarists to replace Izzy and Slash. Which says to me, that even Axl knows how important they are!

Well, here’s my stance on this one. And let me clear this up before we get started. I have not heard ANYTHING off the new album but Shackler’s. I don’t even care to cuz I don’t care for anything by GNR. Nor do I like Velvet. I hate Axl. I hate Slash even more. But I see it like this.

People change. Music changes. If it didn’t we would have the same album every damn time. Yeah, when Paul left the music sounded different but not really. Look at Psalm 69. There are tracks that are definately Paul (Corrosion, Grace, etc). There are tracks that are definately Al (TV II, NWO, JBMH). Now. Look at the tracks that are more Al oriented and you see they are more “thrashy” even 15 years ago. Paul wanted to go more industrial. We got a few more albums with Paul more at the helm (granted mostly due to Al’s insane drug usage and drinking) and then he leaves and we get more Al albums. Switch timeframes and bands.

GNR released 2 albums of music before the huge break up. UYI 1 and 2. You got more Slashy songs like Get In The Ring, Coma, Shotgun Blues and on and on. Then you got songs which are more Axl like November Rain, Don’t Cry and so on. Axl was already pushing to go more pop. Slash was wanting to go more rock. Rather than drag it out like Ministry did they spilt and you got the Slashy stuff in Slash’s Snake Pit and Velvet Revolver. Axl wanted to do his thing but waited for whatever his reasons are.

There’s no difference in the two bands. It’s the same music from either one that you were already hearing. You just haven’t listened to it from that perspective. I get really tired of hearing this “It’s not Ministry or GNR” shite. Yes it is. You just want it to sound like it did when TWO people were collaborating rather than one person being at the helm and dictating what the sound should be.

Get a grip people.

Peace!

Krowe

actually, “get in the ring” was all Duff McKagen(right down to the lyrics), except for the solos. Don’t Cry is what i was talking about earlier, song structure Izzy, solo’s Slash, lyrics Axl. November Rain was, Axl song Structure and lyrics, Slash solos! I think Coma and Locomotive were all Slash (Minus the lyrics of course!) Sweet chold O’ mine riff was all Slash, chord progressions izzy, Lyrics Axl. that recipe goes for patience, My michelle rocket queen, wttj, the majority of the songs off of uyi2…

Look at Psalm 69. There are tracks that are definately Paul (Corrosion, Grace, etc).

Those songs are the crappiest on the Psalm 69 album and GnR sucked in the beginning and they suck now.

That’s my 2 cents.

Well almost…

MELVINS RULE!!!

Blasphemy! Except for the part about the melvins

I never really ever heard the Melvins. My only exposure to them was watching them open for Primus and basically being booed off the stage because people wanted Primus. I was drunk off my ass at the time, but I remember thinking they sounded pretty good…

You’re awful lucky the economy’s in shambles. [cool]

Corrosion is a great tune. I just dig it. 15 years ago, I though it was great. 15 years later I haven’t changed my opinion.

Wow. You really are commited.

Melvins are the all-time greatest band on the planet…after Rezillos.

Are you talking about that Japanese band from the 60’s with the french name? I have been diging on them so hard, just got ‘yodo-go-a-go-go’ recently and totally love it. their bass player highjacked a plane! anyway, maybe you mean something else coz i think you spelled it wrong.

Melvins indeed rule, i have heard rumours they are coming to oz early next year, which would make sense as half of them are already here for the fantomas tour!

hapy christmas all

Funny how 15 years ago or whatever “get in the ring” axl sounded so tough and badass (maybe it’s cause i was because i was 10) but now that song has just not aged as well as others.
