Don’t get me wrong, dude, i like it. I wouldn’t say it took courage to make this album, though… It’s a pop record, and it doesn’t take courage to make a pop record… For me, I’m not trashing the record, I guess I’m trashing the labeling. For example, when Paul left Ministry and Al started making speed/thrash metal, many said that it’s ok speed/thrash metal but it’s NOT Ministry. Meaning, It’s pretty good for what it is, but it’s NOT Ministry. I guess I’m in that camp for GNR…
I have quite a few bootlegs and of course their whole studio catalogue (Including Chinese Democracy on CD and Vinyl) and what Axl just put out is good, BUT IT’S NOT GNR. As far as the first 3 songs being good… well, I’ll give you “Better” (best song on the cd imo-probably the closest thing to a real GNR song, but still miles away from one ) but “Shackler’s…” and “S/T” are horrid easily the worst songs on the cd.
Even had Slash stayed on, the songs still wouldn’t be quite perfect because Izzy Stradlin was their chief song writer. He’d come up with rhythm/chord progressions and most of the melodies for Slash to solo over. so I guess it’s a lose lose situation for Axl. For me, GNR is those three guys; song writer(Izzy), lyricist(Axl) and lead guitar(Slash), Drums and bass are simple and easily replaced…
I do find it humorous though, that Axl needed 150,000 guitarists to replace Izzy and Slash. Which says to me, that even Axl knows how important they are!

Well, here’s my stance on this one. And let me clear this up before we get started. I have not heard ANYTHING off the new album but Shackler’s. I don’t even care to cuz I don’t care for anything by GNR. Nor do I like Velvet. I hate Axl. I hate Slash even more. But I see it like this.
People change. Music changes. If it didn’t we would have the same album every damn time. Yeah, when Paul left the music sounded different but not really. Look at Psalm 69. There are tracks that are definately Paul (Corrosion, Grace, etc). There are tracks that are definately Al (TV II, NWO, JBMH). Now. Look at the tracks that are more Al oriented and you see they are more “thrashy” even 15 years ago. Paul wanted to go more industrial. We got a few more albums with Paul more at the helm (granted mostly due to Al’s insane drug usage and drinking) and then he leaves and we get more Al albums. Switch timeframes and bands.
GNR released 2 albums of music before the huge break up. UYI 1 and 2. You got more Slashy songs like Get In The Ring, Coma, Shotgun Blues and on and on. Then you got songs which are more Axl like November Rain, Don’t Cry and so on. Axl was already pushing to go more pop. Slash was wanting to go more rock. Rather than drag it out like Ministry did they spilt and you got the Slashy stuff in Slash’s Snake Pit and Velvet Revolver. Axl wanted to do his thing but waited for whatever his reasons are.
There’s no difference in the two bands. It’s the same music from either one that you were already hearing. You just haven’t listened to it from that perspective. I get really tired of hearing this “It’s not Ministry or GNR” shite. Yes it is. You just want it to sound like it did when TWO people were collaborating rather than one person being at the helm and dictating what the sound should be.
Get a grip people.
Peace!
