Ministry ImpossibleMinistry won’t be playing Austin or San Antonio despite the fact that both their openers, The Jesus Lizard and Laika & The Cosmonauts, will be playing in town tonight, Thursday, at Liberty Lunch and Continental Club respectively. Seems the tour kicks off in Houston on Wednesday and goes to Dallas on Friday, but skips Austin for some reason – or at least one-third of the bill skips Austin. Ministry’s publicist insists that the omissions are simply because Houston and Dallas are simply “better markets for [the band],” but I can imagine that Al Jourgensen doesn’t want to be seen anywhere near the site of his heroin bust last year. I understand your reticence, Al, but c’mon! Two years you lived here and all we got out of it was one lousy stinking Buck Satan show. (Cosmonaut Mikko Lankinen was asked Tuesday, after a secret gig at the Texicali Grill with Teisco Del Rey, what he thought of Ministry. His reply, after a long pause, was “Yah… interesting…”).
They toured with Jesus lizard and Laika in 96. Sphinctour. The exact date the openers were in Austin was 5/2/96.
I don’t know what was worse that tour - the opening acts, or the 45 minutes of blaring country music before Ministry hit the stage.

i would have loved to see the jesus lizard. I was too broke to go to that tour but the one by me had the young gods and foetus opening. I wish ministry could get back to having decent bands open up for them.
My favorite Ministry opener (not counting RevCo…that was more like a double-bill to me) would probably be the Survival Research Laboratories film we watched before the LORAH show in '88. Very cool film. KMFDM was good in '90, but they were just, well, KMFDM.

The young gods released some stuff on wax trax/play it again sam, so there’s the connection. I loved their early shit, but i have never seen them live. I am sure Al & co knew who they were and were possibly friends as everyone in the old wax trax days seemed to know one another.
I love the “Envoye” 12" that Wax Trax released back in the day. Hilarious music video, too.

I wish I had seen the LoRaH tour, but missed it. Survival Research Laboratories were really cool, the performances I’ve seen of them on video are great, definitely worth checking out. KMFDM as an opener was pretty good, this was when En Esch still had hair[:)]
