An academic treatment of industrial music. The key word is ‘critical’ and so I hope it is just that.
It is nice to see this focus nonetheless

Meh, I can’t stand most “industrial” music.
I might be picking this one up. I’m not really into modern industrial music, but it is one the most interesting types of music and has a really cool backstory.
“Assimilate”. Sounds like it’ll be very Puppy-centric
It seems they’re focusing on when Industrial was actually good and not this new synth pop, aggro-tech, electro-Industrial, terror Industrial style.
Honestly I don’t see much similarity in ideology or anything like that between Einsturzende Neubauten or TG and a modern band like Combichrist…

I think that’s actually a really interesting evolution. They don’t look the same at all on the surface, but you can draw a line from (say) TG to Neubauten to Ministry to NIN to Project Pitchfork to Combichrist and it makes sense how the puzzle pieces fit together.
I keep hoping that industrial will someday revert back to the days of Neubauten, TG, Puppy. All this aggro-tech and futurepop has grown old, and was silly to begin with. Also some fans of that stuff think it’s the epitome of industrial LOL.
The whole thing has just gotten really ridiculous.

Keep dreaming…
really interested in reading this, will pick it up one of these days
Is it published by Cleopatra? Please say “yes”.

I dunno I just can’t take the newer bands seriously. I think it became too campy and cheesy because it wasn’t tongue in cheek like TG or Einsturzende could be at times. Took itself too seriously, but at the same wasn’t good enough like NIN to make up for that fact.
The new “Industrial” stuff is just too cheese to be taken seriously. The goggles, the slinkies in the hair, the whole thing became too much about a certain look and a 4/4 dance beat.
The postpunk rock element of “Industrial” is totally lost in the new stuff. I just think it’s dorky and the ones that are decent (like Psyclon Nine) get repetitive quick because their songs are repetitive and the rage becomes flat…I don’t hear a range of emotions in it.
Oh, I can’t disagree that the whole thing got too formulaic around the turn of the century. I’m just saying the evolution is there, if you look for it.
