FLAC’s, my friend, FLAC’s. As far as I know, this is an EXACT digital copy of the original material (meaning you can rip a CD, and it IS the CD), but yeah, even 320 kbps MP3’s lose a tiny bit in the process. As for it being 10 times the amount on a disc than on a digital facsimile, I kind of doubt that. The material on the disc had to be transferred to a digital format before recording, yes? And since I got my first CD player in 1989, what are the chances the transfers were of the quality that they are today?
They are digitally compressed so as long as the bitrate is high, the only thing you losse is completely inaudible things to the human ear. Audiophiles will argue (like they always have) that those subsonics are what add a particular ‘feel’ to a song; however, this is becoming less and less true with current recording and mixing technology since there are things like anti-aliasing (or whatever the equivalent in sound is called) around right now and if you additionally have a good decoder, you’ll get very good sound. MP3s are a bit limited in this respect but the latest OGGs and M4As arent.
The funny thing is I’ll probably still actually buy a hard copy of RGB anyway, but I’ll do it during the summer or something, which means I wont be helping the band with the all-important first two weeks sales. I did already buy it from eMusic tho, so I dont feel like a thief.
when (if) i find a copy i’ll buy it. i actually bought another copy of HOTM (digipack) the other week, because my original copy (jewel case) is 7000 miles away.
I didnt even know HOTM had a version in Digipak form? Is that the version with bloodlines or… umm, the other version.
i have the version with bloodlines and it’s not digipak
flac is a wav file compressor that saves all the information from the original file. consider it like a “zip for wav files”.
as for mp3s go - well 128kbps mp3 file is 1/12 th the size of original, (i.e. 7mb mp3 versus 80mb wav) of course tons of audio data is lost. 192 is better; 320kbps i think compresses the file with the ratio of 6.
one thing i don’t understand is why these bootleggers upload SHIT quality recordings in FLAC, i mean, jeez. i can understand if a soundboard quality bootleg is being shared in FLAC/SHN/APE, but the general rule i noticed is the shittier the bootleg is, the more it has like “DO NOT CONVERT TO LOSSY FORMATS”…
i mean, goddamn. leeching of a whole 700mb of shit quality bootlegs… it’s sorta all over dimeadozen; these poor people…

It’s the original version without bloodlines and with the No W remix thing, plus that other track, walrus? it’s exactly the same as my other version, which is annoying cos i’d have liked bloodlines (i can’t get hold of rantology out here - here being Bangkok, Thailand). i was surprised to see it in digipack form, i just assumed it was an american release… but i don’t know.
as for the mp3 thing, yeh, people are always going to argue over compression and what you can actually hear. but since mp3 compression takes out frequencies that you can actually hear there’s no real debating that. a 40mb wav file compresses down to about a 4mb 128 encoded mp3. that’s an approximate ratio of 10 to 1. (or what Gila said!). that’s a huge amount of missing data.
higher bitrate mp3s are obviously better quality, but there’s still a huge amount of data missing. i can still hear it (or not hear it), and i can hear the effects of compression too.
FLAC is good because it’s lossless, but it still suffers from the same problems that all lossless compression suffers from - the files are still big. a 40MB wav will still be more than 20MB in size after compression.

yes, but hey, that’s life. in any case, it’s better to download, say, 450-500mb .flac fileset instead of .wavs of the same cd that take up 700-730mb, right?
But then again, I seem to remember Animositisomina and Houses having really great early buzz (“return to form” “best album since ____”) only to suffer from massive backlash after a few months.
The difference is that Animositisomina was actually a really good release and saw the band taking strides in new directions, while HOTM was a huge step backward attempting to “return to form”.
I feel that Animositisomina combines the raw power of Psalm 69 with some of the asthetic and production style of Filth Pig and a few of the bizarre elements introduced with Dark Side of the Spoon. I really love the subtle electronics on that album (thanks Paul!) and I’m glad people started to appreciate it after HOTM came out.
I mean who can argue that “Impossible” may very well be Ministry’s best song ever?? C’mon, seriously, this song fucking kicks ass.
And “Stolen” is another gem, showcasing an exciting direction for the band. Love that ultra distorted guitar and the drums just kick ass on this one.
I just love the style of Animositisomina and it is so sad that Paul left the band after that brief glimpse of a bright future for Ministry.
HOTM was such derivative thrash metal…so immediately gratifying and then boring as fuck after the next 2 listens. I mean I didn’t write it off completely because there were some moments, but I felt the majority of it just didn’t have that originality and creativity that Ministry displayed consistently up until that point.

yes. to me it’s ministry’s farewell album. it has elements from almost every album, actually.
houses and rio grande is sort of al jourgensen solo records.
oh yeah, if anyone wants tons of rgb and tour threads, go to pissarmy - it’s swarmed with lame threads like “WOOHOO I JUST GOT MY RGB” or “WHOS GONNA GO AT SHOW XX/XX/XX - XXX” and whatever pointless 2-post threads you can think of
i don’t think it’s lame - well it’s lame allright, but there are some sane people, but majority leave the impression of being around 30 years old but acting like kiddies.
about gila - yes that’s me. all i’m saying that pissarmy is all worked up about the release… which is a good thing. the bad thing is that these threads are mostly pointless and yes i’m skipping them.
funny thing - two ministry boards and two totally different ones.
I’m looking forward to the CD. I rec’d a free poster on Sat. with Al’s signature. Hope to get the CD & album Mon.
Animositisomina is boring.
Except for the title track.
It only seemed so good at the time because it came after Dark Side of the Spoon and Filth Pig, which more people hated than liked.
yes but comparing to houses and rio grande, animositisomina is super-great.

I say “no” to you.
No.
yeah, these are just our opinions. to each his own, etc.
