Anyone seen the Mars Volta?

Like I stated in some other posts, I’m trying to decide if I want to spend $40 on them or the next night on Ministry/Meshuggah. I’m working out of town so I can only drive back for one or the other (luckily I’ll get to see High on Fire in Oklahoma City Monday night for sure). I know Meshuggah is good live and Ministry was in '99 but sucked in '06. So has anyone seen the Mars Volta in concert? How were they? Long set? Stage presence?

I saw them open for System Of A Down two years ago, and they were unbearable. They basically played a 45-minute set with no breaks between songs, like a jam band would play. The SOAD fans would have none of it, and pretty much booed them off the stage at the end of their set. I recall the singer making a rude comment to the crowd, before dropping his mic and walking off. Their style of music does not translate well to the stage, in my opinion. System, on the other hand, is a very good live band, even though I really can’t stand them (it was the ex-girlfriend’s favorite band, so I took one for the team).

Here’s a few boots you can download and listen/decide for yourself:

actually it’d probably be wiser to spend it on neither of them. I loved at the drive-in, don’t get me wrong, even put on a show for them when the poland leg of their 99 tour got cancelled. but mars volta? naw, they are clearly sonic victims of dillusions caused by heavy drug abuse. no wonder these formerly sweet peeps spend a good time in rehab… T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E.

I remember At the Drive In, my old Horror Punk band the Spectremen played with them on that '99 tour. They were alright, the singer was very energetic (I’ve never seen anyone else but him do handstands off a stage while singing[:/]) I haven’t really listened to the Mars Volta though, but it is the singer and guitar player from ATDI. That being said the reviews above don’t make me want to run out and buy it.

I’ve actually seen them 4 times. Twice on the Frances the Mute tour, where they played for 2 1/2 hours and played eight songs in that time. They closed with Cassandra Gemini, the 35 minute finale to Frances the Mute, and made it last an hour and 15 minutes with crazy soloing. Saw the system tour, they were only ok on that, but they only had an hour. In January, I saw them in Burlington, VT and they played for about 2 hours. Most of the new album was played, 4 songs off Amputechture, and a few each off the first two. They are pretty innovative, I don’t know if I’d call them better than Ministry though. It’s a toss-up.

Heard a few of their songs and found them obnoxious. Didn’t like the vocals at all, and had to turn it off. Couple of people I work with went see them live this week, but I think it’s absolute shit. Ministry live right now isn’t too special, but i’d choose ministry over mars volta any day.

Mars Volta just did a show here in Glasgow recently and it got poor reviews…it was a 3hr set with shitloads of wank feedback etc before and after songs.

Oh yeah…go see Ministry ya pussy!

The first Mars Volta album, ‘Deloused In The Comatorium’, is pretty darn good - after that it was all pretty much down hill.

Doubt that I’d ever bother to see them live.

That’s actually the album I heard. I couldn’t sit through the entire thing. Someone at work kept talking about them so when I finally download that album, after three songs I deleted it.

Ok, if you don’t like the albums, you’re probably not going to enjoy the live show. If you do like the albums, you probably will enjoy it. I do realize there are people who don’t like 3 hour guitar solos or Rush style vocals, however, I’m not one of them.

Yeah, that’s what someone else told me as well. If you can’t stand Rush (which I don’t), don’t bother. I hear their live shows are pretty interesting if you’re into them though. Lots of improv jams. But the music just doesn’t appeal to me. Some people I work with just saw them live this week and they say it was amazing.
