Ive been addicted to their latest album, Monotheist, for the last month or so. It has to be one of the most oppressive and genuinely evil sounding albums ever recorded. Sure, its metal, but its really intelligent and innovative metal. Its incredible how they were able to be absent from the scene for 16 years and then come back with something that is still on the ‘front line’, experimental and innovative. So, anyone else on this board into them? Have you heard Monotheist and if so, what do you think?
I was just checking that album out on amazon before coming over here!
Are u psychic? Or is it me?
Anyway, yeah been meaning to get this for awhile. Is it really that good??
I have never heard any of their earlier stuff. Is any of it worth getting? I like their album cover art. And I’ve also heard that Hellhammer is classic too.
It depends what sort of stuff you are into, CF definitely cant be recommended for everyone…
Their early stuff (Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion) is basically early death/black metal - heavy as fuck, with quite simplistic structures, harsh vocals, high speeds etc. Then, in 1987, they released “Into The Pandemonium”, which was a total shock to the metal community. That album is really experimental for its genre and features many ideas that other bands would later copy. They even used a few samples and a drum machine on one song, predating Ministry and their Land Of Rape And Honey…
After that, they released “Cold Lake”, which was a total embarrasment (it was a hair metal album). They never really recovered from this blow, released one more decent album and broke up.
Now they’re back and “Monotheist” is in the same category as “Into The Pandemonium”.
